Yeah, often people won't be told until placements are out or until the incoming JET accepts the position. (You're not allowed to contact your successor before then) you can contact me if it's me, I won't tell anyone, I promise jk jk it would be awful to contact your sucessor if you're not allowed to ahahah .....unless May can't come soon enough, wktk to tha moon

The wait for placements is already killing me even though we have like a month left T_T. I'm curious tho for the other incoming CIRs what did you put for your placement requests? I did 1.SHIKOK 2.Kyushu 3.Okinawa but I'm really hoping to be placed somewhere in SHIKOK (I'll be happy with anything tho hue). I'm also kind of curious for current CIRs how rural/urban is your placement? Given the nature of the position I would be kinda surprised if there were super rural placements and figured most people are probably placed somewhere in a town or small city, but what are y'alls experiences?

So i'm a shikok cir (Mikan Land) and i'm in a town of about 8,000 people. As far as eigoken cirs, there's pretty much me and the one at the kencho (the others are from china, korea, malaysia, etc.) I know a 1st year cir (also eigoken) in Ko.chi in a village of 1,300 people. from my understanding, they do a mix of ALT and CIR work

My first pick was rural Hokkaido and I got it! I am in a small town of 4,000 ppl that's about a 2-3 hour drive away from the nearest city. I do a mix of ALT/CIR work but I really like the balance between the two and the type of work I do. I am also the only CIR in my vicinity. Congrats on getting upgraded, yukina7!!

Hyogo 2. Osaka and 3. Saitama - I can't drive (yet) so I asked for an urban placement. Even though I'll accept anything, I've always lived in a city so I don't want to change my lifestyle *too* much and burn myself out, y'know? My heart yearns for GATEWEST but the sad truth is that GATEEAST would be more convenient for me for personal reasons. Obvs idk what positions are floating about so I'm really interested to see how it pans out. I hope you get your SHIKOK placement!! Edit: Oh you asked about current CIRs lmao sorry i'm sleep deprived

I've especially always wanted to go to Osaka. I studied abroad in Nagoya in 2019 for a summer but couldn't get anyone to do a weekend trip with me T-T. But anyways I'm excited for all of us to hear where we are going haha.

It is possible to even be put in a town of less than 20,000 people. The closest town to the farm I grew up on only has 7,000 people so 20,000 to me is a metropolis haha, but I guess I'm in the minority of applicants. I'm not even sure if I would prefer a rural or urban placement, but it's good to know that there are a mix of placements for CIRs.

The wait is killing me too ;_; I put down Shi.ga, Fukuoka and Nagasaki. I am mostly just hoping to be placed anywhere but Hokkaido/Tohoku just simply because of the cold (but if I was placed up there, at least I would be close to 2 places on my Japan bucketlist, 面白山 in Miyagi and がっかり島 in Iwate). I also requested urban mostly because I can't drive. B regardless of where we end up geographically, the content of our jobs is the most important so I hope they manage to match us with positions that align with our interests and goals!

Given the nature of the position I would be kinda surprised if there were super rural placements and figured most people are probably placed somewhere in a town or small city, but what are y'alls experiences? There's people in Tokyo and Osaka, and then people in tiny towns like Dee XD If you're a city CIR, you're more likely to get somewhere smaller than if you're a prefectural CIR, since those are placed in the prefecture's capital (as is my case). And then some prefectures are more rural than others, too!
I had put 1- usamatropolis, 2- Kansai and 3- Whatever as my choices, but I was an alternate. I still got that place with the Lake and NOTHING ELSE (which is in Kansai), so I was pretty lucky! Otsu is a mid-sized city, and it has the advantage of being really central (45-minute ride to Osaka station, 10 minutes to Kyoto, I can be in Tokyo in 2 hours too) and having a good transport system, but still having a lot of nature (starting with Lake Biwa, but not just that) Unfortunately, at this point in time, there are no openings here this summer XD

When CIRs get their placements does it usually mention the specific contracting organisation (city hall, etc.) or will it just be the city name and we'll need to wait for more details?

When I got my placement notification it just had the prefecture and no city (I'm a 県庁 CIR), others had their city, but no specific CO until a few weeks later. Sometimes you might be able to guess what CO you'll end up in based on location but your initial notification generally lacks a lot of details

In general, as CIRs, you will usually be at the prefectural government if you're prefectural, or at city hall if you're a city JET, but yeah, it'll just say the name of the CO and you'll find out your actual workplace and duties later
In my case it was when my office contacted me (although I'm prefectural, so I figured out I'd be at the main government building in the capital)

The issue, I think, is that there are a few places that have a sub municipal organization where you may end up and that is where you might think you'd be in a city hall, only to end up in an art gallery or something. You're still working for the city, just not where you'd think?

A bit off topic but, after I finish finals in the next couple of weeks, I was planning on buckling down and really polishing up my Japanese before departure to make the transition as smooth as possible. I have about 10 levels left on Wanikani and was planning on going back through my Japanese class notes to relearn things I had forgotten but does anyone have any recommendations for things I should focus on / good resources? For current CIRs are there any things you wished you had worked on more before coming to Japan?

When you find out about your placement, you should find out if there's a local dialect and get info about it! You can probably do that by watching youtubers from that area, if you can find any
Otherwise, most people wish they'd be better with keigo

Really late to my reply but i put 1. Yamanashi (because sister states) 2. Nagoya and 3. Aichi (study abroad)
i was an alternate and got what was leftover/a spot my CO applied for after the original deadline. i really got lucky with the size and where i was placed inside my city. as much as i complain about the public transport here, at least its functional even if its not always the cheapest/fastest/or most convenient. also, for the most part, people here arent as nosy/they keep to themselves so i dont get the GAIZIN treatment all that often (maybe also because we are big enough that foreigners arent that rare, especially in the area i live/work)
