So I'm trying hard to think of new projects I could start up to give myself some more work, and I remembered an idea I'd had before I even came here (I actually used it as an example in my interview). At the time there'd be an article going around with children in Brazil skyping with elderly people in the US to practice their English. My mother works at a retirement community in the US so I have that part covered. Obviously there are a lot of limitations, and the time zones will make it especially difficult, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with something like this/any ideas? I will probably talk about it with some of the local ALTs tonight to see what they think.

Some schools in my area have done Skype sessions with schools in our sister city. Obviously that's a bit of a different situation, but according to the teachers involved the kids were excited to get to meet foreign people of their own age. Usually JETs are the only foreigners they ever see. And it helped that our sister city is only one hour off from us...

Hm, that's a thought too. Maybe I could get something going with a Japanese class from my high school.

I have done a few Skype events with our sister city in the U.S and have had some big issues getting young Americans to show up to events. The main reasons for this is that a lot of our events were held in the morning and not subject to negotiation, which means that it would be nighttime in the U.S. when things happened. I would imagine it is doable, but it may be a good idea to try and host evening events and contact a school about doing some sort of exchange in the morning U.S. time.

Yeah my high school offers Japanese and the teacher is a former JET, so I thought about that and talked with the ALT from one of the high schools here but realized that with the timing of the school years, it's probably best to wait until fall...
