So apperently they have not even done my work evaluation yet. But they intend to hire me again. Is there anything on the reappointment form that I should know? I was hoping to be able to dicuss reappointment with my family over my break.

As far as I can recall the form itself is very simple? It just says that they would like to recontract you and has two spaces where you can either accept or reject the offer. But they usually also give me a (preliminary) copy of the next year's contract, which may have changed (slash will have definitely changed in terms of salary, at least), so that might be something good to know in advance.

Does anyone keep files for stuff that are not translations? School visits, other projects, interpretation assignments, etc?
(we keep a file of the 通訳依頼 and some of the 参考資料 but otherwise... )

no yark shark are those all digital folders i assume? and you only have one office, right? idr... actually I have physical folders of all of those things too as well as a folder of biweekly schedules I made for myself (basically it's just a table I made in word where I break up each day of the week into GOZEN and GOGO and then write the things I have to do. I keep the current one under the clear thing on my desk and write in stuff when it comes up. It's mostly for me but my coworker suggested I start keeping them). And yes I have one office.

Now that it's the new year and all I seek the organization knowledge, specifically for papers and things
I just have a metric shitton of accumulated papers from all sorts of meetings and handouts and whatnot, as it is NIHON NO BUMKA to always print out everything apparently
But on frequent occasions I have no idea whether something is gonna ever be relevant again. There are a fair number of meetings I have been made to attend with huge piles of handouts that have to do with like, budget, which is none of my business at all. But maybe I'm a bit of a packrat cause I'm afraid to throw anything out in case I need it again. And of course there's things that are tangentially relevant to me, but not super related to my work, and a variety of papers that I have been handed that I don't even know what they are for at all...
Not to mention my desk has no sort of filing system. I just have empty drawers to pile stuff up in.
Any general advice on work paper organization, or maybe methods to approaching what you keep and what you throw out?

This is my desk situation as well, so, I will share my organization methods. First, I have a bunch of folders that I keep on my desk: 派遣・学校訪問、多文化共生(イベント・語学講座)、翻訳(完了)、翻訳(翻訳中). These are the folders I'm constantly digging in and out of, so I want to have them handy. Then, I just keep everything else in its own similarly labeled folder in my desk. I pretty much never look at the ones in my desk, but on the off chance stuff ever will be needed again, I will be able to find it. Within the folders, I just organize them based on the dates I received them. So, I might have one folder which is like, "disaster prevention handouts," and from the back of the folder to the front, it's just "handouts August to Sept.," "Oct. to Nov.," "Dec. to Jan." So, if you have many budget meetings, you could just make a "budget meeting" folder. Alternately, you could organize folders based on the place where you got the papers (like, a certain 課 or 協会 or whatever, if you have any you have a lot of interaction with). I don't throw much out for fear of it being important, but if there are any handouts I know for sure were only given out for my benefit (i.e., a printout of a presentation, the data of which is saved on our computers, and which everyone else also got a printout of), and I don't need them, then I throw them out. Also, I have a resource folder of random things that are helpful for work but don't need to live on my desk. That way I don't feel as bad throwing out stuff from like, 研修, because I can save the really useful stuff there and throw out the rest.

I've always thought that if I could magically change one aspect of myself overnight it would be to become one of those people who are just naturally organized, even to the extent that I kinda of wish I were one of those people who are manic about it and HAVE to have things neat and organized or they go crazy. So many times I've been proactive and tried to set up organization systems, but they inevitably fall out of habbit pretty quickly. I REALLY want to have a 翻訳(完了)folder though, because a lot of the material in my honyakus overlaps and it would be so handy to have them all organized in physical form within my reach to use as reference. Maybe someday

I have tons of organizational stuff, but mostly it's to make-up for the fact that I literally have ADHD and am a naturally forgetful disaster :')
(that said, another thing that can help which I just started today is just saving a file on your computer with difficult words/phrases you realize come up a lot in translations, and saving how you have translated them in the past so you don't have to think through it again each time!)

Yeah, my goal is to have a folder with the original file in its source language, a copy of my first draft with red penned corrections by my soup, and then the final draft of it translated into the target language, so that I can keep track of my progress and development and go back to see what areas I strugged with and need to work on, as well as have a practical guide for how I translated things in the past to use as reference.

Thank you for the input momo black ! Outside perspective of how someone else deals really helps. I think I really need to invest in more folders and labels. If I could find decent binders that have rings rather than plastic sleeves that would probably solve most of my problems... shoulda thoughta that while I was home over break, whoops. Also Mumblesnore you bring up a good idea, I too wanna have a phsyical 翻訳(完了)folder now. I have one full of files on my desktop but with the limited data storage space I have it's not quite as convenient, and I've had to delete a few things, which is frustrating. Also I'm the type of person that's awkwardly in between, where I generally need things to be nice and neat to function properly, but when I'm stressed it gets messy, and when it's messy I'm less efficient, and it's a vicious little cycle of anti-productivity, yay

I'm... not even sure? It sounds reasonable to have supplies I could use, but tbh when I first arrived I got taken to a stationery store by my supervisor to get a few things that the CO paid for, but since then I've never been informed how to refresh my supply, and since that was before I had done any actual work, I didn't actually have a good idea of what I need. Sounds like a conversation I need to have I guess u_u
And clearly the photo is a very acrobatic, athletic folder showing off its impressive balance skills. Probably a member of Cirque du Soleil.

I guess it's just showing the folder's strenth, in that it's not just flopped over at a 90 degree angle.
I thought they were trying to imply that it could just magically ballance like that on only an inch of the desk.

Do people have folders and stuff to organize their paperwork? I finally bought some folders and brought them in today, but only three, and I made them: 参考用 - tourism pamphlets of other cities, handy handouts from orientation and T&I, my contract (because I didn't know where else to put it), etc. 完成後 - translation assignments I've already completed, along with a copy in the original language for reference 完成前 - all paper work associated with current assignments and 依頼 I haven't started yet ....but I feel like that's not enough. The 参考用 folder especially feels like it could be broken up...but also aren't former translation assignments I did some form of SANKO too? Hmm. Please tell me your organizing categories. I have folders like - JET stuff (materials from Mid-Year Chaos, my contract, other JET notices go here) - PA stuff (notes from PA meetings, anything we do for the ALTs goes here) - Newsletters (my newsletters and radio scripts back from KAIRAN go here) - Tourism (tourism pamphlets for reference) - Library (we did a lot of work for the library at one point, so reference) etc etc The paper copies of our translations are filed somewhere else, and we CIRs just keep digital records for our own reference. not that the budgeting/生活 thread was inappropriate there's a lot of info here too about this topic (so for future reference we can see these posts) digital copies wise we have our translation/interpretation folder inside of which is -each nendo's completed works* -works in progress* -references (my master translation file, the 課 etc names file, other 参考 papers for recurring translation) *each 依頼 is in a folder that has the 依頼表, the thing to translate, the translated version, and any other 参考資料. the folder is named with the deadline, the 依頼 name and sometimes the 依頼者 so like 170331_〇〇区観光パンフ【〇〇区観光課】 at my 2nd office (the international center) i have these folders in my documents -newsletter -translations for 2nd office -main office translations -presentations -other random folders for projects and random files both personal and work at main office we have the previous translations binders that go way back, and i have pamphlets and booklets that have come thru my office and/or have info that comes up in my translations a lot. i really need to finish organizing those...

you could do the day you turned it in instead? it is super helpful for when you cant remember what you called it but you know approximately when you did it
