Out of curiosity, is anyone currently (or was previously) involved with the Japan Association of Translators (JAT)? I've seen a couple of their events and was already interested, but today I saw the e-Juku online translation course which looks pretty great. Of course you need to be a JAT-member, which costs 10.000 per year (19.000 for two), so I was wondering if someone has experience with the association to give an idea whether it's a good idea to join.

I don't know anything about it, but it seems good for #networking and ichiman per year doesn't seem so bad. Maybe I'll join in a few years (if I remember) (someone remind me).

I've thought about it and looked into it a bit, but doesn't seem worth it for me at this point in my life, considering I'm about to go to the US and spend like 100k studying translation there.

This is a tangentially related anecdote, but my mum is s freelance translator and is part of the equivalent network in the uk - she has met lots of people and gets to go to skills development workshops/events and lectures through it, so I think networks like this are a good idea. If you're looking to work as a translator (particularly freelance) then I think a man a year isn't that much really

Oh, yeah, once I'm settled in more permanantly I would definitely be looking to join a network like this.
body-juice sacrifice may or not be involved.
