「とんでるじっちゃん」hue
Hmm...it seems like they intentionally chose something with an affected Japanese--「わたしは飛べるんじゃ」--to see how (or if) we would relate that into English.
I accept this challenge.

SOROSORO JIKAM DA I keep checking this page www.kurodahan.com/mt/e/khpprize/index.html but they haven't announced the 2017 translation material yet, but it should be up any day now.... I'm feeling antsy now that I don't have the JLPT to study for anymore and I need/want something else to do. Kanjikentei for that next level up?

I'm feeling antsy now that I don't have the JLPT to study for anymore and I need/want something else to do. Kanjikentei for that next level up? Hmm maybe I would take one of the "easier" ones that are meant to represent an IPPAN NO Japanese person's kanji level (SANKYUU? I don't even know), but I think it would be a waste of time to study the hundreds of hours required for JUN-IKKYUU or IKKYUU hue. (also I definitely shouldn't be counting my chickens before they hatch; JLPT results aren't even out yet.)

I think its either 3kyuu or jun2 for junior high/ high school
i remember taking it many years ago and failing because I am a bad person who is bad at studying for tests.
there is also a website Mainichikanjidotcom that has word combinations that come up.
i use it for study when i havent got a lot to do at work

Are we open to comparing notes and strategies for translating Flying Grandpa or are we tryna be competitive and cutthroat?

I wasn't planning on it haha
it's more of a challenge that way and really tests your skill individually

I am deeply hurt by the first page of the pdf and how the text isn't straight
i have low hopes for my translation but it seems like something that could be fun to do wen i have spare time.
but in the case that i did win i would shout drinks to those here who entered.
but this is a very hypothetical situation

The YABAI thing is that they post all entries in a PDF on the website with their scores so the ※whole world can read your bad translation and laugh at you.
※ maybe an exaggeration

I'm typing up a very 直訳, bad translation just so I have a literal "english version of the japanese" to work with. then i will create actual nice prose out of that
honestly there are only a few things i am really stumped on

when i was reading through their instructions i noticed some of the eigo was a little bit off which is a little hypocritical ....
do they post you name along with it? i read that you can use a pseudonym. edit
you have to give them permission to show your bad translation

It's actually super interesting to read them all and see the different (and sometimes plain wrong) ways people translated certain things.

I printed it out at work but then it wasn't at the printer when I went to go grab it so I think someone grabbed it by mistake and I'm waiting for them to make the "oh this is in YEIGO so it must be for Mumbles" connection and bring it to my desk so I don't waste paper and ink.
(or maybe it just didn't print hue)
