Hello everyone! Hope you're all doing well and staying sane during these continuously crazy times. Apologies if there's already a thread like this that exists. I help my office run the English and international tourism PR social media pages, and lately I've really wanted to step up content creation in preparation for the (seemingly far-off) eventuality of the restart of inbound tourism in Japan. To that end, I have been thinking that tapping into the hugely vast TikTok community would be a great way to do this and allow people to see amazing places throughout my placement prefecture. Does anyone run/help run an official TikTok account? Do you have any tips for starting one, or any insight as to how effective it is as a platform for tourism PR? ありがとうございます!

Sorry to follow up with another question(?) I never used tiktok and I don't really know the exact audience on it. Have you heard of places using it for tourism PR? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was an app with a very young audience, with more of a comedy focus to it. I'm kind of wondering how it would work for tourism PR ?-? Or if that would be the audience you want to reach as potential tourists (i.e. if the users are very young, even if there wasn't rona, would they be able to travel and visit?) I don't really know much about the platform though... It'd be cool if using it could help make you guys internet famous or get more people following your other SNS accounts though.

The tiktok audience is young but expanding, and tiktok viewcounts are crazy so I think it's def worth trying. I haven't seen any CIR run tiktoks yet tho
I feel like there's a lot you can do too, like skits with the local yurukyara or showcasing inaka life or beautiful tourism spots

The majority of TikTok users are definitely generally a lot younger, and the length of the videos lends itself well to comedy and short bits, so I think that tends to be the most popular content on there. But I think especially in the last year or so it has truly evolved to encompass just about any genre of content you can think of, and some of my favorite creators are ones who show the beautiful landscapes or cityscapes they live nearby while telling a story and making it compelling. I think it could be used for tourism by: - Highlighting the big tourist spots - Showing some of the 名物 foods - Making interesting videos about local history/culture etc. zztopYurukyara skits would be amazing! Like creating a "yurukyara" dance or something, that could be big if it gains traction Thanks for the ideas!

Did this go anywhere? I wonder sometimes if it would be worthwhile to ask to borrow the local mascot's outfit and just go around filming it to promote various places, but getting permission would be tricky b/c it's Japan.

I wonder sometimes if it would be worthwhile to ask to borrow the local mascot's outfit and just go around filming it to promote various places, but getting permission would be tricky b/c it's Japan. I know some towns do SNS accounts with plushies of their town mascot, wherein they frame it like the yuru-kyara is the one showcasing the spots. You could also like photoshop in a cartoon version of it into photos. At least at my city hall my coworkers are the ones who go inside the yurukyara costumes (I think I'm too short to go inside?) so act as the yuru-kyara where/when they can l ol. I feel it could be weird to just bring around the empty costume itself with no-one inside of it though. What if locals see it being dragged along town

I've never tried to borrow the city mascot costume for SNS, but like Leita said I think the mascot plush route is a great idea. This city may have an unfair advantage already with just a really good character, but Mutsu is killing it: www.instagram.com/discover.mutsu/

I have a FB, IGN, and twitter that I manage, but seeing if there's any other alternatives. There is an idea to start a YouTube channel or Tiktok, but honestly, video is just not my thing and I'm kinda slightly hoping to start a Podcast. Still on the fence of doing it in Japanese, or in English, or in both but wanted to see how starting a new outreach worked out.

There is an idea to start a YouTube channel or Tiktok, but honestly, video is just not my thing and I'm kinda slightly hoping to start a Podcast. Still on the fence of doing it in Japanese, or in English, or in both but wanted to see how starting a new outreach worked out. Hi there! It's worked out alright since the start of the actual channel! It is a bit difficult because I have to work together with the local tourism bureau so schedules and timings are often tough to time. I would recommend that if it's possible for you to create and manage whatever channel you'd like to use on your own (with help from your office ofc) but without being beholden to another entity outside of your office or city hall nado, this might be easiest so you can cut out the middle man as it were. Video creation is definitely a lot, and there's a lot out there to use. If you're looking for any resources, I would highly recommend: ・ YouTube: Davinci Resolve - this is free software that comes with a database of templates, transitions, effects, etc. that you can pay extra for to access (but do not need to). It's a really powerful video editing program, but does have a bit of a steep learning curve. Luckily, YouTube and Davinci's website offer lots of tutorials to help you get started. ・ TikTok: YouTube and other corners of the internet also offer lots of tutorials and guides on how to best utilize the TikTok app. It's actually quite intuitive and all-inclusive within the app. There are difficulties you might face (saving videos halfway through editing is tricky, narration function can be limited, etc.) but it's pretty easy to just get started right away on there if you're looking to try it out. In my case, I created my own TikTok account and made some sample videos to show my office and tourism bureau to pitch the idea. At this point, I have about 15 videos on my channel and am currently trying to figure out how to up viewership and whether or not that will involve paid 宣言or something along those lines. Podcasting could also be a great idea, and you could potentially do a bilingual cast if that is what you are looking to do! Let me know how it goes/if you have any other questions!

Thank you so much for the quick response!! Ah, the middle-man thing does make sense.. I was actually debating if I should work together with another tourism association of somesort since I won't be able to get a single penny from BOE, but I might opt out from that. Although, I'll probably need to make a few samples first to fetch the idea in the first place, so after looking at the total workload I can re-consider as well. Davinci Resolve is great!! Although I know its mainly for video editting, its helping me with sound editting as well!! Mhm! At this point I'm thinking of making the content in both Japanese and English, but mainly to the Japanese audience in order to spread 国際理解. I do have a lot to do before it actually runs but once its set in motion I feel like it'll be easier! (Worst case, I do it privately, make more followers than the BOE SNS, all so that slap my supe in the face with it muhahaha!)
