Hello, CIR people. I’m a university researcher in Japan studying translation attitudes and processes. I am enjoying seeing all the interesting comments on this forum about your experiences. These experiences are really valuable. If you have two minutes (literally), I have a brief survey that I'd love you to do, created specifically for CIRs. Of course, survey answers are completely anonymous. www.surveymonkey.com/r/CIRtranslation **QR code also available below!** The ultimate goal of my research is to raise awareness of translation issues in Japan, in particular perception gaps that may exist between Japanese and foreign staff in terms of translation, and disconnects between original and translated material. Please note that I am sending out a similar survey in Japanese to various international affairs departments in municipalities around Japan. That survey is intended essentially for Japanese staff in these departments. Key questions in both surveys are identical, in order to compare perceptions of Japanese and foreign staff. At the end of the survey there is space for you to comment freely on any translation issues. Of course, please reply here if you have any questions or comments about this research. Thank you! I sent my reply but I am not sure it went though. I clicked send and then my browser blocked it...
I should have added technology issues to "things to be improved" because working in a proxy browser is a massive pain sometimes.

Miscreative, sorry that it didn't work for you. I guess it's a problem with your browser, then, not the survey?

Hi, Miscreative. I'd like to be able to tell you whether it came through, but of course the surveys are anonymous. If you want to tell me some distinguishing birthmark of your survey answers, I might be able to find it. Like something in a comment you wrote?

No worries. It's been a while so I just submitted another one at my office without blocks

gregapan Answered the survey Feel free to contact me if you want more in-depth answers! For "The quality of machine translation output is sufficient to communicate information to readers.", I wanted to comment but didn't have space on the form, so I am going to comment here. I selected neutral as I felt that it depends on the translation machine being used. Google is a mess but Deepl is quite reliable.

i hate when we default to machine translation for the city website because while you can mostly navigate it, the specifics (those things you need to actually get official stuff done) get confusing.

Very true! And it also depends on the original Japanese being used! I dislike the "〇〇とは". It never does translate properly with Google hue.

Yep, agreed. Useful quotation, thanks. (Always anonymous, natch.)
