Hi. I'm back. Some of you already saw this on my FB announcement but I'm gonna be a 2-time CIR, hue. This time I'm headed for Urasoe-shi in Okinawa, so my old username will finally become relevant again, hue. Fun fact: Turns out it's long johnson and eckstein 's old placement, hue. How many Oki CIRs are currently active on here? 4649

Not sure) I haven't heard from my CO yet so if anyone has any advice pls reach out I also got prefectural and haven't heard from my CO yet! Congrats & welcome And oh snap, I think we might be in a big LINE chat together! I'm not using my real name here like I do on LINE but I'm one of the 3 people in there going to 奈良 ... Oh yeah, I think I've seen you around!

I've been told by my embassy that we would be contacted by our CO/pred when departure dates are announced, and someone in Australia had apparently been told the same!
That does make more sense (even though I wanna hear from them asap).

My CO seems to be under the impression that the embargo (from CLAIR) on contacting September arrivals won't be lifted until the end of this month or so. I pushed really hard to get my CO to let me talk to my successor because this timing is awful for a lot of us on our way out. I have a feeling a lot of incoming JETs this year are going to arrive at apartments that are just trashed.

Speaking of predecessors and apartments, apparently I'm the first CIR from my country in the placement I'll go to (I think there is someone in the prefecture but they're not at the specific place I'll be working at...), so probably dumb question but is your successor necessarily someone from your country? There is apparently a person leaving the place but she is not from the same country, I'm thinking I might get her place? No idea...
But then again we're all in the dark here so I don't complain
(Edit: This is technically a question about placements so I'm not out of place in asking this here am I )

Oh no...I wonder where the gap in communication is happening if we were told by our (US) consulates that preds could contact us after June 30th but other COs are waiting until late July (I also wonder what's the purpose? Wanting certain things to be finalized?). Do your contracts this year end in July or August?

(Edit: This is technically a question about placements so I'm not out of place in asking this here am I ) Not always. Sometimes the CO just asks for a person from any country that speaks a certain language. If English is your first language, that could be any number of countries. It could also be that your CO requested a different country this time, or requested the same country and the powers that be, for some reason, could not fulfill this specific request by the CO, so they plugged in whoever closest fit their other requests (e.g. female, male, can't drive, no kids, married, etc.)
If you speak a language other than English, it could be that the CO reevaluated their needs and decided to request a CIR from a country where a majority of their foreign residents are either from or speak that countries language.
As you can see, it could be any number of reasons hue. In any case, it isn't uncommon to take over for a person not from your country. It may make your job easier if you are expected to do anything regarding cultural exchanges, especially if you're from a country Japanese people know little about. Could help you make some hulemdos at work, too, I'm guessing. Might encourage more people to talk to you about your country, which would be nice.

Alright, let's see if I can get multiquote working properly... No idea... But then again we're all in the dark here so I don't complain (Edit: This is technically a question about placements so I'm not out of place in asking this here am I ) Are you CIRing for the same language as the person before you (for example, they were from the UK and you are from the US)? In that case, you are very likely taking their position/apartment. Some COs are picky and want English speakers from a specific country, but many don't have preferences. If you're for a totally different language than the person leaving, it can happen, but it's pretty rare. We've had CIRs swapping apartments around this year because of different timings of who was leaving, when, and which apartments had contracts expiring that were/weren't going to be renewed. I assume after this year there will be less of those. *sees another niigata* it’s difficult for all parties. incoming people—especially the late departures—are going to be stuck with stuff that has been sitting in humid apartments for months with no fresh air/cleaning, but disposing of the stuff in ALT/CIR apartments means the successor is stuck refurnishing it. someone like me moving from within japan doesn’t need/want old furniture, and i know it’ll be difficult for the next person...but we can’t afford to store our stuff in storage for an undetermined amount of time and also it’s our stuff so i want to use it?? There is just one more time-sensitive thing -- how much do you want me to leave? I know someone else got in touch via another method, but I just want to make sure you are good with me tossing everything except the stuff that belongs to the gov't or that is part of the lease. We'll get in touch more officially hopefully soon! I'm moving out of the apartment on Monday, so if you have any time-sensitive questions that aren't related to the job specifically (stuff like apartment room dimensions), feel free to reach out on whichever platform. Oh no...I wonder where the gap in communication is happening if we were told by our (US) consulates that preds could contact us after June 30th but other COs are waiting until late July (I also wonder what's the purpose? Wanting certain things to be finalized?). Do your contracts this year end in July or August? COVID has exacerbated the communication issues that are already a result of the kind "federated" model of consulates doing a lot of the early communication with JET Participants. Consulates are probably operating on information about how things go in normal years, but this year has been anything but usual... To offer some speculation, they may have COs reach out to participants in a "phased" order based on when participants are coming to Japan. But after last year, I don't think any COs are going to be incredibly excited to reach out to, for example, an arrival scheduled for December this year if they still have few/no guarantees they will come. Contract end dates are all over the place. I think they mostly end in July this year, but CLAIR also had this system of short-term reappointments (for just a month or two) last year that I think has continued into this year. At very least, there's a note on this year's paperwork for remaining JETs about how short-term reappointments are annotated.

I am French and the person leaving is from China. I sadly don't speak Mandarin (or Cantonese for that matter). But I was recruited to promote exchange between France and another French speaking country so that's probably it!

That's a huuuge shift loool. Perhaps they're looking to do French-specific things? Though if they're looking to do KOHLYUU with french-speaking countries, there are plenty of options...
I have this impression that CIRs that speak languages are other than English are pretty busy on the regular (with exceptions, of course), so you'll probably have a bit of work to do

Same with Nagoya-Shi, just 1 CIR. Then there are a few ALTs and CIRs scattered through the prefecture. I've heard from my great-grandchild that there are more JET positions popping up in Love Knowledge, mostly for Olympics related stuff, but they might just disappear after this year, hue.

Hello! I got placed in a beach-side town in Miyagi prefecture. I am very content with this placement Nice! I was on the Iwate coast for 3 years and often travelled around the Miyagi coast too. The area is breathtaking! If you've got a google doc or anything with recommendations for Iwate/Miyagi/Tohoku I'd love to see it!

I was on the fence for a long time about applying as an ALT or CIR so I think this will be right up my alley I love teaching, but don't really like kids, so this might give me a happy medium. If I do have to teach a lot, hopefully it's with high school students.
