Having started in August this year, and having done mostly translation/interpretation work, I'm looking for some opportunities to get involved more with my local 国際交流協会, and thinking of organizing a new event.
I'm thinking of organizing an International Movie Night, with non-English/non-Japanese movies, possibly with refreshments from the movie's country of origin, and maybe a short presentation/info about said country.
I was wondering if anyone here has experience in organizing anything like this. I'm particularly interested in copyright-issues, and other things that might evoke the much-feared "ちょっと難しい・・・" from my superiors.
宜しくお願いします!

I don't really have any help to offer, but this sounds interesting! I imagine if you're not getting money for the event (so not charging admission) and properly buy/rent the DVD or some other paid way of getting the material, then the copyright should be all right?

Yeah, my grand-pred did something like this (it was all U.S. movies though) but I thought it sounded interesting.
Wish I could give you advice on it. Hope you'll tell us how it went when you start it.

If I had an event-planning type position, book groups/international film nights would be the activities I would really want to do (i.e. force everyone to participate in my hobbies ^^;; ) It's a shame sometimes copyright issues can make this difficult. :/ I'm sure there must be a way to do it, though, like how university film societies will charge people to watch films they screen and they don't get in copyright trouble.

I'm sure it would be doable, right...?
It would be a fun event to do for myself as well. I was thinking of doing a Board Game Day or something similar - most of our events are "bring non-Japanese to our city" events, plus the international festival. Oh, and a couple cooking classes. I'd like to do more events aimed at city residents, but I don't know how many people would show up...

Thanks for the feedback! I think it should be doable too, and looking at MEXT's 考え方、a movienight without an aim for profit shouldn't be subject to paying royalties.
Time to casually drop it in conversation a couple of times and see the response. Will keep you posted on the progress!

A book club sounds so fun D: But I feel like there might not be enough people that could read books in English in my area

That's the benefit of a move night: subtitles.

An ALT hulemdo of mine was actually thinking of doing a similar thing, but the reason she was having the copyright issues was because it was a movie that wasn't released on dvd yet. Should be grand otherwise

it is i, i am here again. my ka suggested i kikaku a movie night to study yeigo
they mentioned that if im not taking entrance fees, it shouldnt be a problem copyright wise for screening. but i think theyre gonna confirm that statement after asking around.
the activities theyve suggested so far is picking out native vocab and grammar from the dialogue to go over. but idk if i should screen the entire movie and do like a simple ~share your kanso in english~ afterwards, or only screen a certain length of the movie and pick up dialogues from that.
was also thinking i could do repeat after me practices with the dialogue, but if the event becomes children向け then idk if hands-on practice would be too hard.
so far, i figured if this is greenlit for copyright screening, that i could show disney movies in original english, ghibli??? movies and episodes of popular animes in english dub. the point that my ka made was that if its a movie that the general public has probably already seen, then we can focus on studying than actual eiga-kanshowing

is it a one off event chiew where you practice the words and watch the movie all in one go? I hope you find a good one to show, I bet it'll be fun! and nice that you can maybe use a recent-ish movie I'm doing a book club event this year where we'll read Wizard of Oz and then watch the movie version on the last class, but it's over the course of 10 weeks/my boss said it had to be an old movie to avoid any copyright issues

chiew that makes sense. Short episodes are probably good! If you can use Netflix or something that would be even better, maybe, as you could find shows with like 10-15 min episodes it'll depend on the level and age of your intended audience, but for reference (if it helps), when I was an ES ALT my teachers advized me to keep any video clips under 10 mins because the kids (6th graders, so like 11 ish? years old) wouldn't really be able to understand anything at that level, and thus any longer videos would just bore them too much

update on the movie night kikaking, i was told that streaming it from my personal netflix acct wont work cause im paying for it, and i cant rent dvds from tsutaya bc city hall budget wont cover rental fees. then i was told disney and ghibli might be kibishii in terms of copyright, and that i should pick something to stream from the selection at the library.
when i went to check out the library, it only have english 実写 movies from the 1990s/2000s. they dont even have recent anime dvds. since the point of the movie night eigo study was for HEAR english, event idea has quickly been sacked. unfortunate, since they were the one who told me to do it ;shrugs;
