Oh man I wish I had found this thread sooner!
I am wondering if anyone has encountered the word "渡し船" before. All the translations say "ferry" but my image of ferry is completely different. It seems like 渡し船 are used for transporting passengers, not necessarily vehicles so they can be much smaller?

In my town we have a ferry to go from my hometown to the town across the river/bay/harbour (since my hometown is technically an island but connected to the rest by roads), and that is small and only carries people but is still called a ferry

Ohh thank you! I too lived in a town close to the water once and looking back at pictures of a boat that was used to tow passengers between islands, it was also referred to as a "ferry". I'm always afraid that if I use that word it'll give the impression that it carries cars or something.

Please don't let this thread be defunct cause I have a boat related question that's specific... If anyone has the time, I'd appreciate help with the following translation.
Context: This is supposed to be part of a new web page to promote conferences in the future so we're trying to get people to use this boat as a venue for a conference or whatever. The boat has is 2 floors, high-speed, and can fit 200 people, but the only words they provide are: 小型船. Literally, that's it...but there's a whole lot of small boat types. Therefore, I am not satisfied with a direct translation.

So...I have returned with more information about the boat in question.
Can a yacht be used for educational purposes? I have this biased idea, I guess, that a yacht=parties, so I don't want to call what looks like a yacht to me a yacht. For a better idea, image a two decker boat with a motor. There's an upper deck to look out and on the first floor is a cabin room with microscopes and tv screens. There is no glass underneath though that you can see through, so it's not a glass-bottom boat. It can have about 200 people on board and is about 35m long.
Names being considered A. Observation Boat X B. Educational Yacht X C. Observation Vessel X D. Educational Vessel X E. Research Vessel X

I agree with the mental image of yacht, but vessel could also potentially mean something big for big projects?

Thanks for the photo. It's like that, but imagine it's all nice for tourists. Like it's all white and clean. I guess a vessel could go either way though then.

Aha. These are the magic words from the link:
In addition to the university’s programs, the vessel will also be used to support science outreach programs for local K-12 teachers, students, and community members. Researchers and instructors from other institutions will also be able to charter the vessel for scientific or educational purposes.
...because the place here is focusing on K-12 and so I wouldn't know, but I would say from my impression that the boat in question isn't just a tour boat, but it's not like a super duper heavy duty research vessel for a small range of PHD students or something.
