This is an old thread, but I just wanted to mention that (as a US citizen) I've never had any problem going through the non-citizen line at immigration. In the past I've brought my Japanese host family back to the US with me for a visit, and more recently my husband, and since none of them can 英語 at all, I just went through the non-citizen line with them. I think the people at immigration would be pissed if you tried to sneak a non-citizen through the (much shorter, faster moving) citizen line, but they don't seem to care if citizens go through the non-citizen line. Last time I went home with my husband, I even ended up having to interpret for the people in front of me in line, a mom and daughter, because US immigration officers (at least those I've met) have NO patience with people who can't speak English, and Boston doesn't seem to have Japanese translators on staff.
