Hello hulemdos,
So I am calling out to anyone who deals in tourism as a CIR. I am currently the second CIR in my city, and this is the third year that CIRs have been active here. I was at a soubetsukai a few weeks ago when the buchou of our deparment opened up to me and asked me to "broadcast our city's ii tokoro to the world." Apparently this was the main reason for them calling a CIR to our city, but for some reason, my pred didn't engage in this much. Therefore, there aren't any avenues put in place to reach people abroad. I told them I would be glad to write articles in English for a foreign audience, but I had no idea what platform would allow me to reach them.
This is where this post comes in. Anything you guys have would be appreciated. If you could link facebook pages, city websites, etc., I would be very greatful as I have to make a 報告書 and submit it to my boss. We are just trying to look at examples at this stage in the process. Thanks!
PS. I will be contacting the CIRs listed on the "CIR Database" who deal in tourism. You might get an email from me

I'm a first year/no pred CIR who works in tourism. So, I probably won't be good as an example since my position is new and we're still figuring stuff out, but I can give you advice on starting a little bit of stuff from scratch for tourism maybe? Some stuff we've figured out for PR/情報発信 so far: I got approved to make an English Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I also post on my city hall's facebook and instagram in English as well. The content I post on my accounts v.s. city hall's is usually the same, but on my English accounts we made it so I can post about shops and businesses as well. One thing we did was to send a letter/document out to every 飲食店 in town saying that I can do some 取材 for them or English translations etc. and how to send a request. (In my city this meant sending out to like 120 places...unfortunately not many requests have come though. But that's an idea.) Although my section is tourism my bu has a couple business/enterprise support sections inside of it too, so sometimes I go around with those people to do PR for businesses etc. As for content for posting about main 観光地 etc. a lot of my coworkers need to go out around the city for meeting etc. or to do maitnence at some places. So I've gone along with coworkers when they go out of the city hall so I can take photos along the way, such as if they are doing maitnence at a city run facility by a mountain or a beach etc. I will come along and take photographs. This NENDO we also plan to try using paid advertising for the English accounts I made. We were talking about this recently in the facebook thread. Random collaboration stuff for PR: We've been going to different cities nearby asking if they can collab with us for PR stuff. I.e. when we have a big event, can they post about it and put up our fliers somewhere? And we can do the same for them when they want help broadcasting something. I've also sent out some emails to English media people who have done pieces around the larger area to share information about my city too. I'd also recommend getting in touch with your kencho etc. and seeing what they have going for inbound tourism. i.e. they can probably help you broadcast your city more on tourism websites etc. if you give them the proper information.

First year CIR working lightly in tourism and heavy in PR. We have an established English Facebook page that I try to update at least once a week. We also have an Instagram that is bilingual. We have a ton of brochures in English and we have three people (not including myself) who are fluent in English who help out at the front desk when needed. We have an English-language website and we make a lot of English-language documents when we have big events, like English maps and recommended courses for folks.

We also have a facebook page that is mainly aimed at local residents. But only about 130 or so people follow. Is that similar to the numbers you guys see?
Also, would you mind linking me to your pages? You can message me if you want to keep it private
WApi, unfortunately the link is broken

WApi, unfortunately the link is broken LMAO of course it was, I went and fixed it. We are getting up to 500 followers! I know one of the first things I was ever asked to post was to celebrate 400, so I'm looking forward to making that 500 post.

I have a Facebook and Instagram for promoting my city and posting English event information and such, both of which I made myself and published on 1st October last year I also have a personal blog that I try to post on at least once a week, then share it across to the Facebook page The Facebook is nearly at 250 followers, but the instagram is yet to get to 100, probably because I forget to post on that as often

I just used wordpress, I find it really easy to use ^^ also if you pay just a little you can get a .com address for the blog which'll make it like an official website without having to set up one on your own. Also there are templates you can use to make it look nice. Some you have to pay for, but there're plenty of good free ones

I update a lot and we partner every now and then with GaijinPot; I met one of their main staff by chance when she was escorting some folks through here and we were both excited to meet a fellow midwesterner.

For a webpage consider the free version of Strikingly.
For Facebook without money- well that's hard. But deliver good content daily, reshare from pages more popular than yours (in part to get their attention so they share your posts), and post selected posts in relevant groups to build readership. It took me ~2 years to get over 2000 fans. Try to enlist other foreigners (if there are any) to write a column, send you pics for a pic of the month feature, etc.
For Facebook, see Visit Miyagi and Visit Matsushima (both run by CIRs). Rock on rock hand is a great, popular page run out of the prefectural office- it does frequent profiles of people in rock hand.
Consider building a monthly email list if they let you- I used Mailchimp for our town fan club.

I also inquired about funding the page after making some content and getting some sort of following. However, they shot that down with the normal "muzukashii". Instead they said that funding the city's main page and linking mine would be a possibility.
Strikingly! Hopefully it isnt blocked on my work computer.

Currently looking up how to increase facebook followers for free.

I want to participate because we're so few CIRs here and even fewer who can write in English, but I'm also terrible at writing (not so much that my writing is terrible, but I just can't get motivated). Dilemma dilemma...

Our main cultural thing here is bamboo crafts so I'll probably write about that, we have a museum here and also multiple shops selling bamboo products, and I think one guy that teaches apprentices the art of bamboo crafting was designated a living cultural property/treasure or something (I had to native check a leaflet about the museum and it mentioned him) One shop I know also does classes for making your own bamboo stuff too.

Was this emailed to your soup, or to your work emails directly? If you found out about it via your sups could you tell me the title of it in Japanese, or like the subject of the email? (My soup is extremely busy, I don't think he has any time to pay attention to my JET stuff/emails etc.)

Hey everyoneeeee! I'm late to the party, but...
I'm in a similar position and was just told that our mayor wants me to 発信! for our city. My supervisor asked that I send out feelers for getting an idea of how other CIRs run their social media pages (e.g. how often do you post, what kind of content, etc.) So, for those of you who have already linked pages, thank you so much!!
Bigger question that I haven't seen answered as much: Do you guys just do English or English+Japanese posts? Do you ever include other languages?
One thing my soup is worried about is excluding people who speak other languages. In our city, we have quite a bit of Chinese and Korean support, and she doesn't want to give off the idea that we are a Japanese/English-only city. Sticking point though is that I speak zero Chinese or Korean, and we don't have CCIR or KCIRs, so... I feel like a bit of a useless lump right now hue. I was thinking of at least sticking a 中国語・韓国語対応 tag (in the respective languages) for spots that actually have support, but yeah.
How do you guys appeal to non-Japanese and non-English speakers?

I only do English posts 'cause there are other pages that do Japanese. I might try doing Japanese info for things like events too though in future. If I could get my French back up to a good level I wanted to try including French too, but I don't think we actually have that many francophone students/residents here. We have Chinese kouhai but I'd feel bad giving him more stuff to do by asking him to translate my Facebook posts into Chinese too (that and it's my page so I'd rather be honest about the fact I don't speak Chinese, I feel like if I post Chinese info people'll think they can message me in Chinese but if they did I'd not be able to help them personally so I'd have to ask Chinese kouhai again etc etc.)
I guess on a city page it'd be easier 'cause you could just add the people doing the different language support as Eternal Overlords or something, but if you don't have people to provide support for those languages then surely it can't be helped unfortunately, unless you get a kind and competent volunteer to do it?
