Thank you, Orihime! I appreciate the feedback. I'll have to search past threads because I'm obviously not the first person to ask this but, do you have any advice for the Japanese portion of the interview? What does it entail exactly?
Sounds like reading a news article out loud is part of it.

Sounds like reading a news article out loud is part of it. I think you are given 1 min to go over a news articles , and later will be asked to read it out loud and answer questions about it |

Whether or not you are given time to read the article beforehand depends on where you interview. Some people have the chance to read it to themselves, but others don't. In my case I interviewed in Seattle, and I was handed the article and told to read it out loud immeditately. The types of questions you get asked also depends on where you interview, some places just ask more simple questions in Japanese where others ask more difficult questions. I believe the length of the Japanese portion differs too.
In the "Future CIRs" section where this thread is, there are threads where past applicants talked about the interviews in the past few years. So you can read through to see different peoples' experiences in the past and what their interviews/articles/the Japanese portions were like.

Hm, well for my interview, they just had one native English speaker and 2 Japanese guys, and the Japanese guys would ask Japanese questions and the native speaker asked the English questions. I'm really sorry but I don't actually remember what the Japanese guys asked me because I was so nervous at the time, I think maybe they asked why I wanted to be placed in the preference I gave (Aichi/Shizuoka/Nagoya City) and why I wanted to be a CIR? And then in the reading part they asked me about how much stuff gets recycled in my hometown and what gets recycled (because the passage was about recycling when I did the interview)
But yeah, the passage I had to read out felt more like a JLPT reading comprehension, which I guess are kinda like news articles, but it didn't feel as dense or wordy as a news article. I got a couple minutes to read through it on my own in my head, then I had to read it aloud. BUT, any Kanji I couldn't read (there were quite a few but I was terrible at reading Kanji), I was able to just pause and they'd fill in the reading for me (even when I forgot the reading for a word I'd read correctly earlier on in the passage! XD) which was kind of reassuring.
Then after reading the passage they either asked me their own questions or the questions were already on the paper, I can't remember, but it was kinda like 'what is the text about' 'what is this text trying to tell people' etc. Kinda normal reading comprehension stuff, and then they tie it into where you're from and ask about that if it relates.
Since you're interviewing in Canada and I interviewed in U.K it might be a little different but hopefully my experience'll give you a rough idea at least ^^
