Hello! I’m a former JET ALT who recently discovered this forum. I’m very interested in applying for the JET program for a second time in a few years but as a CIR rather than an ALT. My main concern at this stage is explaining why I want to do JET a second time. Wanting to work as a CIR is a big factor but the main reason I want to return to Japan in general is the fact that I was there from 2019-2021 and wasn’t able to experience everything that I wanted to because of COVID. I’d appreciate any type of advice on this topic from personal experience to complete speculation. Any tips would be appreciated haha.

Personally I feel like if you say this for your reason, the interviewers might ask you back like "but Covid is still a thing" or "then what if Covid gets worse again while you're in Japan?" So I'd recommend coming up with an explanation that can show how you're a good candidate. Maybe Spring-Flowersboy or Shimanchu 2024 (current JET second-timers) could chime in :o

(It makes sense to me.)

Maybe Spring-Flowersboy or Shimanchu 2024 (current JET second-timers) could chime in :o ahhhh I missed this sorry! I was an ALT who became a CIR for my second go around on JET! Yeah you definitely want to come up with something to justify a second time. the interviewers said my interview was harder than first time CIR candidates and they were basically trying to see why I deserved a second opportunity on the program. Also what leita said, you def want to have something in your pocket for if they ask about the covid thing. I would also definitely emphasize wanting to work as a CIR over the COVID reason since it's harder to impeach. (before COVID) I leaned in hard on the "I want to have a different experience with JET and I have a passion for exchange. I want to leverage my grad school experience etc" over the fact that I basically just wanted to CIR for a bit so I could have fun and a visa for future job stuff lmao
