Thank you for sharing this. Our area is a mess when it comes to English consistency so I will try to make some local guidelines for us, too.

That second link is a really helpful and comprehensive guide, and I wish my city had something like that I can't help but notice, however, that a lot of it conflicts with stuff the JR does in places like Tokyo and Kyushu. So I guess it really does depend on the place, and as long as it is consistent within a specific area, then it's ok. And since where I am there is no romaji on anything, I guess I just need to pick one way and then stick to it (and make a guide so that future CIRs will too...) Yay, more guides to make~~

I've been asked to help with a few sign names.
○○空港・△△行 バス乗り場 Bus for Marumaru Airport and Sankaku ○○バス(コミュニティバス) バス乗り場 Marumaru Community Bus Stop 国道○○号線 Route ## ○○駅前広場 Marumaru Station Square (Marumaru Ekimae Square?) ○○温泉 Marumaru Onsen (Marumaru Spa?) 自転車駐輪場 Bicycle Parking 原付・自動二輪置場 Motocycle Parking
How to deal with two place names on the bus signs? Spelled out 'and'? Comma? Ampersand? Do I need to say "bus stop" or is that implied?
Station? Ekimae? I feel like I see Ekimae on signs a lot and wonder if it would be better to 統一, but I like Station better.
I want to do "Marumaru Onsen" but other signs in town use Spa and I probably should 統一 that one...
Is "motorcycle" good enough for 原付・自動二輪?

Oh yikes, I don't like "spa" for onsen.
That feels to me like calling sushi "raw fish on rice" or tempura "fried dishes" etc. I feel like people should just know what the word onsen means, especially tourists who specifically came to Japan.
But if that's how your city does it, I guess it's SHOGANAI.

I know, right? Onsen and spas are completely different things.
I'll mention it, see what they say.

wait, onsen isn't hot springs for y'all?
obvi using just onsen would be best, but i know quite a few people who don't know what that word means, so that doesn't work a lot of the time.

i feel like if you are in japan you should already know what onsen means. or if not you should have to look it up and stop being silly

i know plenty of people who come to japan not knowing what onsen means because it's not something that exists overseas.
sushi and tempura, yeah, because people eat those (at least in America, and i'm fairly certain Europe)
but people don't go to hot springs, and if they do, they're def not calling them onsen

Yeah my choices presonally would be
1. Onsen 2. Hot springs . . . . . 143298429834123. Spa

i dont expect random gaizin abroad to know what onsen is but i DO expect gaizin who have come to japan to have done enough basic research to know what one is or find out what one is during their stay

Hokuto makes good points, I'm going to push for "Hot Springs"

assuming an American going abroad will do basic research is a mistake in and of itself

Also lots of people go abroad to meet someone they know there and do no research and just let the person there deal with everything.

Hmm. When I hear "hot springs" my IMEEJI is a natural phenomenon outside (like something you would go see at Yellowstone), whereas "hot spring bath(s)" might be closer to what an onsen actually is.
But I'm still part of the leave-it-as-onsen 派

yeah but then the person who knew what they were doing would know and tell them?
i really think it should be onsen

I also like onsen better.
I will suggest onsen and see how it goes.
"hot spring bath" would almost certainly not fit on the sign.
