Hi, not sure where this should be posted, please move if appropriate.
I'm confirmed for my 4th year as a CIR, which means my original 3-year work visa will expire in July 2016. I'm curious what other CIRs who have kept on the JET program for over the original visa term have done for renewal.
There are the 1, 3, and 5 year visas issued by immigration, and on the renewal application form you need to write your desired length of stay and reason, where it says:
審査の結果によって希望の期間とならない場合があります。( It may not be as desired after examination.)
I would like the 5 or 3 year visa so I can skip the process the next time (I plan on continuing for a 5th year as a CIR and *possibly* as a PC with a CLAIR, or with a different job in Japan. My CO renews on a yearly basis so I can only come up with paperwork stating a term of one year on it.
Do you have any experience renewing the work visa? What did you do about the 1-3-5 year thing? Success and failure stories? And any relevant links or information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there and welcome to the forums! I requested a 3-year visa (because I think the 5-year one is new?), and got it even though my contract was only for a year. I think mattbox has requested the 3-year visa multiple times and only been given 1 year though, so I'm not really sure what they base it on.

Hey man, glad you found the forums. If you are who I'm pretty sure you are, we talked about this a couple days ago
While I don't personally know anything about this, I would also be interested in it if any senpais could help out

I was a prime lurker on the old forums. It seems that it's up to the discretion of immigration and there are no exact rules like when applying for Permanent Residence or Citizenship. I'd like to hear about some more experiences. Hey man, glad you found the forums. If you are who I'm pretty sure you are, we talked about this a couple days ago

hi kobebryantbeef and welcome etc etc as a 4th year i just went through this too. i think if you make it clear to your workplace that you want to do a 5th year and/or look for work in japan afterwards (regardless of whether either of those facts are true or not) then they will be more likely to write down 3 years on their part of the application. because there's the part where you write how much you would like, and their part which is for how long they would like you to get on your extension. i made this clear and got them to write down 3 years for me, and i got another 3 years too which is handy. ultimately though, it seems like a bit of a crapshoot, and probably depends on the people processing your application as well. but i am more inclined to believe that your workplace requesting 3/5 years weighs more than you requesting 3/5 years when it comes to processing your application. good luck!

I had my office write a letter stating that I could stay up to five years and I got a three year visa. My co-CIR who is married to a Japanese person got a five-year one.

Fuck Japanese immigration. I only got 1 year both times I reappointed after my 3rd year. CIR in the next office with an identical application to mine (we wrote them together) got 3 years. Arbitrary bullshit.

I got three years. I feel like that's the most common result. Sucks that it's not universal though :/ It shouldn't be different since we're all doing the same application, right?

It's totally random and arbitrary, assuming you write that you want more than 1 year. My coworker fills out the paperwork for our sister-state ALT program and last year all the incoming peeps got 1 year even though he asked for 3, and this year everyone got 5 years. Same exact form filled out the same way. I don't think there's anything we can do about it on our end.
But some COs will allow you to take special business leave or something not-nenkyu to renew your visa, so that's something you can ask about at work.

Let's Resurrecting this thread for original content. After a long journey I was able to renew my work visa for 3 years which seemed to be the consensus around here. I did request 5 years while my C/O requested 2, and I ended up with 3. There are two sections where you have to explicitly state how long you plan on working in Japan, which is probably the most important part of the application. I wrote some notes on the extension process for those people who will be going through the process in the future. It is based on the Nagoya Immigration Bureau but is applicable for any of them. The file is on Google Docs so let me know if you can't see it or would prefer a fax. Enjoy. Notes for Visa Extension

I don't need it now (yet?), but the truth of this hits home too hard.

Thanks Mr. Kobe Bryant Gyuu,
I actually went in last Friday to get mine renewed and they said that my CO's application needed to be redone because they couldn't accept it double-sided and because I didn't have all the proper tax 証明s. Let's hope it works out this week...

Let's hope it works out this week... That's unfortunate, but for government offices the rule is if anything is being submitted for approval it has to be single-sided. Forms that require pen and hanko ink bleeds through, and if only one page has an error on it, just that page can be taken out and replaced. You don't need any tax certificates in order to renew your visa, just your completed application, passport, zairyu card, and later the receipt and 4000 yen stamp. I'm not sure why they asked for anything tax related. Couldn't....couldn't they just...photocopy each side of the paper and make it single-sided for you...? Nope.. They don't offer such a service, and that would invalidate the hanko/signatures on the forms. If both sides of the page didn't have hanko/signature, they could be copied at a convenience store and resubmitted to immigration.
