so just looking for a little insight on the process of switching visa's at the end of the CIR process. let's say for example you only stay two out of the three years on the visa, are you still required to find a new job within 90 days and if you do, how exactly do you go about getting the visa renewed/extended?
as a side question, i'm interested in doing more freelance interpreting/ios development work after JET, and i'm totally unsure how the visa process would work for this sort of more untraditional work setting. any insights?

As of right now/as far as I know, you need to do the thing your visa is for within 90 days. But within 2 weeks you're supposed to fill in a Notification Concerning the Accepting Organization that says your visa sponsor has changed. Not sure what happens if you fill this out later in that 90-day period. But once that's done, I don't think you'd have to change your visa until it runs out after those 3 years. Here's the link to info on renewing/extending visa stuff for Chiba, but most of it should also apply to your situation. I asked グーグル先生 about visa regarding freelance translation and got this Japan Times article... might be a good place to start?

I feel like I heard from people that as long as there is time left on the visa and you are not switiching category that you dont even have to do anything if you are going straight to another job?
could be wrong though
i guess freelance might be different though yeah.

I've been in this situation. From what I can tell after extensive research on the internet, the 90 day rule is NOT strictly enforced. There were 5 months between JET and my current job, and I had no problems leaving and entering the country on the same status of residence whatsoever. Not encouraging bumming around on your visa without a job if you've got nothing lined up, just saying don't worry about it too much as long as you're actively looking (and if immigration does ask what you're doing, having proof of your job search may help).
Freelance, can't help you there, though considering there are self-sponsored visas available if you make above a certain salary from piecing together part time jobs under your visa type, then maybe you can.

Also, from the latest CLAIR News: "JET Programme Participants Staying in Japan at the End of the Term of Appointment JET Programme participants who wish to stay in Japan after their term of appointment, to make final preparations or to travel, must submit an application to change the Status of Residence to Temporary Visitor (tanki taizai) before the Period of Stay expires. The Temporary Visitor status is valid for either 90, 30, or 15 days. In addition, JET Programme participants wishing to look for work in Japan after finishing their term of appointment can submit a Certificate of Employment (zaishoku shōmeishō), obtained from their contracting organisation, to the Regional Immigration Bureau to prove they have finished their term on the JET Programme in order to request a Status of Residence as Temporary Visitor for up to 180 days. Furthermore, JET Participants who want to stay in Japan to work after completing their term of appointment on the JET Programme must confirm with their new employer and the regional Immigration Bureau whether or not they need to make any adjustments to their current Status of Residence." The wording seems to imply that the need to change is only if your period of stay is expiring, which, if you have a year left on your visa, would mean it isn't. But the last part also seems to show that it's kind of a gray area that you should confirm with immigration.

Also if you're really strapped but you finished your contract, you can submit a Certificate of Employment (在職証明書) to receive a Temporary Visitor visa valid for 180 days. (This is JETs only woo)

So like if you're leaving after 2 years, aka you still have 1 year left on your visa, you can use the remaining 1 year on another job? and for jobs that stipulate that you must have a valid working visa, does this count?

That's my impression, at least. Even if the type of visa you need for your new job changes (which is also unlikely since I think the one for CIRs covers the widest range of jobs), I think it's pretty simple to change.

Yeah I think you'd just have to submit a notification of change of the accepting organization (it's called something like that I think) but not sure how strict they are about that.

Thread revival!
I changed COs in July 2014 and then went to the immigration office to extend my period of stay in May 2015. That entire time I hadn't told them that I had changed workplaces. They didn't seem pleased that I hadn't submitted the form until then but I didn't get in trouble so.
tl;dr the change of workplace form isn't life and death but should still be submitted anyway

also, it's really easy to change information like your workplace, address, mobile number.
you can do it online - you just have to register for an ID.
