Hello! This is actually my first post on this forum. I apologize if this is not the correct place to post this topic. I'm not even really a CIR yet, because the coronavirus pandemic ended up delaying JET and now I probably won't be in Japan until later on this year or early next year.
I know it may actually seem too early or like I'm getting ahead of myself, but I have some questions about the value of being a CIR for my career and post-CIR prospects. First, a little bit about myself:
- I'm from the UK, graduated from uni this year. I studied History and International Relations.
- I've got the JLPT N2, planning on passing N1 when I get the chance.
- Maths isn't my strong point. Didn't do maths A-Level. Don't really know programming or anything like that.
Question 1) What kind of jobs do most CIRs go into after leaving JET?
Question 2) I'm not really sure what I want to do job-wise, but if I wanted to go into marketing, research or sales in Japan after JET, how feasible would that be, assuming I had N1?
Question 3) Linked to the above. If I want to go into marketing, research, sales or corporate whatever once I'm done as a CIR, what can I be doing now or once I am in Japan to build skills/experience and increase my chances of getting into those fields? Again, assuming I already have N1.
One of my main motivations for hoping to get into something with a higher rate of pay or greater potential for promotion and skills-building after JET is because my girlhulemdo (met at uni in UK) is Japanese and is currently working in Tokyo. Neither of us are committed currently to living in Japan super long term but she's going to probably keep working in Japan and I'd like to be able to stick around as well. By all means ask me any questions if it helps you provide me with more specific advice. Thanks!
