Currently in my second year of JET and coasting through as a CIR.
Wanted to get a new job since the day I began, but things got better this year and I enjoy maybe 50% of what I do. Though, with the thought of 'what next' ever looming, I applied for a few jobs and have basically received a role in the hotel of my city. I was introduced to this job by other high up (?) people who know I want to be more of a performer/creative/spokesperson and so I guess the long-term plan is to become a spokesperson for the hotel, but they want me to start from the very bottom with a probation year and they gasped when they saw my salary...
I'm feeling really unsure whether I want to take a pay cut right now (as well as more hours, less free time, little to no time off and working holidays)... the opportunity has real potential, but I am so on the fence about taking the leap.
JET isn't forever and the pay & conditions more so. However, as a CIR - surely we are in positions to receive roles that match or are higher than our current salaries? Deep down I just want to move away from the Inaka City Life and become a localiser/translator in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto/Fukuoka. But the opportunity could blossom into something great... the unknown is killing me.
What should I do?
*Ask for the contract*
PROS: New experience Support for life (if I wanted) Chance to become well known where I am Career growth + new skills
CONS: Less pay Less free time Probation May get stuck and have no time off to get interviews Who's to say I end up stuck in the backroom...?

kyushupalmtrees, I highly recommend re-posting this in the job hunting thread since more people will see it and can give you their opinion. As JETs we are paid very well, especially for contract workers, and I believe other CIRs have had to take pay cuts to get a job that they want. I know you're asking for advice, but I feel like this really depends on your situation and what you want to do. If the pay cut is your main con, have you tried negotiating the salary?

kyushupalmtreesFor me it would really depend on how low the salary would be and how much I would enjoy the work at the new job/how it aligns with career goals. One thing that would make me pause to think is the 1 year probation period. Would you be doing the kind of work you want to do from the start? Or would you have to work your way up with the possibility of doing that kind of work? 1 year is a long time imho esp if you don't intend on staying in your placement long term. Before making any decisions I would 1. try to negotiate salary 2. discuss salary and all benefits/working conditions thoroughly 3. discuss what type of job duties you would be doing both short term and long term and on what timeline

Thanks for your message. I will maybe post it after, but I feel like my mind is mostly made up I guess. I think I'll proceed further and get more information and then as you say, negotiate the salary. Thanks again!

I guess my career goals have been all over the place since I left University last year. The probation at the hotel would be check in check out/bell boy and I honestly wouldn't sacrifice everything I had worked for as a CIR to end up stuck in a job role that doesn't actually propel me forward (even if the plan was that it would). They want me to learn the ins and outs, but I think I need them to know how the can utilise me afterwards. The benefits and salary sounded honestly abysmal haha. I think my skills would be better utilised as a CIR and then I should find translation/localisation work - I think that's where I'm headed...

kyushupalmtreesI also received an offer from a Hotel last year when I was a CIR Looking back I can say with 100% certainty that it was the right choice NOT taking the job. I kept searching and got offers from multiple other companies (not hotels), all of which were willing to wait until my JET contract ended. Trust me when I tell you that my JET experience was CRAPPY on the best of days, but even then I am glad I didn't take a low level hotel job.
