An update on mine! I got an email from my supervisor and it seems like I'm gonna be working at at 盆栽美術館 which is nothing like I was expecting. Any CIRs here with this kind of experience? That sounds so cool! I hope you're interested in Bonsai

Same hue A lot of incoming ALTs have been posting on our ALT Facebook page. But GUN MOTHER doesn’t get CIRs unless one of us leaves hue. There’s only 3 here and we never talk to each other hue Damn I was always under the impression that CIRs in the same district are coworkers and keep each other company. I was kinda bummed out when I found i will be the only Jet in my city lmaoo It really depends. I have monthly meetings with all the CIRs in my prefecture so we get to know each other a bit. And we can talk. And rant. And sometimes find each other on these forums and basically go for the same name. But yeah for some places there's no real chance to meet unless you actively search for people and reach out.

Since we now have a placement thread - might as well post here. I'm going to Oita City. Just wondering if I have a pred at all coz I looked up the website it seems that the other CIRs left this year. Oh hi! I was in Beppu, sorta next to Oita City!
I'm not sure who your pred would be, I know one English-language CIR in Oita City left in January this year, but the other one is still there, and afaik there've only ever been two (plus one Korean language and one Chinese language CIR) but it seems there're two new CIRs going to Oita City? So my guess is that one will have a pred and one may be a new position?

An update on mine! I got an email from my supervisor and it seems like I'm gonna be working at at 盆栽美術館 which is nothing like I was expecting. :D Any CIRs here with this kind of experience? WOW, I expect this is a totally new position!! If so, not having a pred comes with its own challenges, but it'll certainly be an interesting experience! I was one of the 県庁 CIR/PAs (left JET a couple years ago after almost 5 years of CIR life) and did interpretations at the 盆栽美術館 multiple times!! At the time, the museum had a small network of volunteers who helped as translators/interpreters/guides and whatnot, so I went on request of the party visiting the museum as part of a larger tour rather than at the request of the museum itself. I wonder if you'll help coordinate the multilingual volunteers and staff and leading tour groups...? I think they also have audio guides now too, so maybe you'll also be involved in making new signs/audio guides/materials for new exhibits and things! I would definitely recommend starting to familiarize yourself with all things bonsai if you haven't already, anyway :) Saitama City is, imo, a great area to live -- not smack in the middle of a metropolis but with all the convenience of a big city! You'll probably live in the Omiya area, the commercial center with the lovely Hikawa shrine/park. (The 県庁 CIRs tend to be a bit to the south in the Urawa area, the government center.) I don't live in Saitama City anymore but I am still around in the prefecture, so lmk if there's any info I can help with! (My forum presence has been very sporadic in 2020 but I will try to check DMs!)

For incoming CIRs who have yet to depart, what have your local orientations in your home countries looked like? My consulate just had theirs this weekend and I was more than a little disappointed that there wasn't a CIR-specific session (as had been stated in a previous announcement), yet the ALTs had a lengthy English teaching session and the Q&A was an all-ALT panel. On top of that, all the information that my PAs have sent out are also heavily ALT-focused. Maybe it feels a bit more disheartening to me because I don't know any other CIRs leaving through my embassy, but I'm curious if others have had similar experiences.

korokke that sucks that you guys didn't get any CIR session. Feel free to ask us anything here to make up for it :( I was lucky 2.5 years ago in Seattle because our (in person) jet alumni orientation had 4 CIR senpai and they did a break out session for us apart from the ALTs. I remember we still had to do a mock lesson plan for an English class or something in our orientation along with the ALTs though, hue. So we just threw together some low effort? lesson plan in our CIR group

My embassy only sent 4 CIRs in my year so almost everything was very directed towards ALTs.
We did have ONE session where the ALTs had some kind of talk and the 4 CIRs went to the sunroom (This was in the Residence of the Ambassador) and we got to drink tea and eat biscuits and just chat to a guy who had been a CIR in like, the 90s, and discuss things we were worried about with each other. It was really chill and I feel like us 4 actually ended up becoming decently close - we've kept in touch and sometimes message about random stuff.
Honestly though, I think the most helpful thing for me was after I arrived getting to talk to Senpai CIR about their experiences and how they handle different situations.

Thanks Leilo and Aqua for your responses! I actually got an email today from one of the program coordinators today telling me that I'm the only CIR that the embassy is sending out this year. I guess I'm wondering if/to what degree it gets easier to connect with other CIRs once in Japan? I see that Mid-Year Chaos is a pretty big event for this, but it looks like us newcomers have shorter contracts this year, so Mid-Year Chaos might not be in the cards as a first-year JET

korokke Besides Mid-Year Chaos, there's also the translation/interpretation course in December where many (but not all) CIRs gather for a 1 week training in Kansai. Sorry to pull the ESID thing but it will likely depend on your placement/prefecture. Some COs have multiple CIRs, and some prefectures hold JET (or maybe CIR specific?) meetings/trainings which work as a chance for local CIRs to meet up. Personally I'm the only CIR in my city and my pref doesn't have any annual JET meetings outside of the ALT training. But I work on some international projects with other (both private and JET) CIRs in my pref, so I get to see local CIRs now and then through work. I think many of us use this forum as a way to connect with other CIRs, especially because we're so spread out and don't get to officially meet/exchange info very often. There's also a discord channel for current cir forum-users and a (sadly pretty inactive) CIR facebook group

When I left as a CIR, I was pulled aside during Pre-Departure Orientation by the JET Program Coordinator along with one other CIR during a Japanese lesson to discuss casually about any questions I had. This happened again for the prefecture orientation. It was nice to chat with those who have been a CIR (senpai).
The only time that I felt like I received some real guidance was from the Mid-Year Conference (Mid-Year Chaos) and from this forum.
The Post-Arrival Orientation in Tokyo would certainly have been helpful if I knew exactly what type of work I was doing and I was not so jet-lagged at the time. I also did not really get to know many CIRs there since everyone was quite exhausted and overwhelmed (maybe only made one hulemdoship with a fellow SHIKOK CIR during the welcome reception).
I do know that for this year's post-arrival orientation, it is going to be a much longer and spread out.
Also, just to keep in mind for this year's pre-departure orientations, since it is going to be virtual it will vary and might be more heavily focused on sending out pertinent information (i.e. COVID-19 test, travel restrictions, etc.) rather than trying to fill up time before the send-off reception that traditionally happens.
