Hey everyone. I am giving my 2nd presentation (in Japanese) about LGBT+, what the letters mean and all that. I have done this once before but this time I have more time so I am working to polish it up. Below is my current outline which I was hoping to get feedback on. What am I missing? old outline is old but i dont want to erase it so its going under the cut - What are identities
- ~examples (nationality, gender, hobbies, (dis)abilities, sexual orientation
- Sexual identities
- Sex (M, F, IS)
- ~recommend: IS the manga and the drama
- Gender
- ~woman, man, trans, agender, etc
- Gender expression
- Sexual orientation
- identities (hetero, homo, bi, ace)
- Put it together and we have complicated people! (ie trans=/=gay)
- (finally) What is LGBT+?
- meaning behind the rainbow
- different flags for different identities (note to self. wear flag pin)
- pride, pride parade, queer spaces/communities
- Sexual minority stats/graphs (revising these to find more current/easy to understand ones. currently japanese survey, US survey, and a European survey showing age group differences)
- Issues LGBT+ people face day to day
- ~cant get married (tons of legal repercussions including: cant get visa, cant see in hospital)
~lack of media representation (lack of being seen. feeling alone) ~trouble finding housing/apartments ~cant adopt kids together ~in order to change legal sex must undergo invasive surgery and a long process
- Famous people who have come out
- Robert Campbell, Kazulazer, Matsuko Deluxe, Haruna Ai (put those 2 back to back to explain trans vs cross dressing (+gay)), Freddie Mercury, Tove Jansson (author of moomin), Tim Cook, Lady Gaga, Jody Foster, Tchaikovsky, di Vinci, Frida Kahlo
- End
Am i missing anything? what do i need to be sure to include/emphasize? any VIPs i left out (that Japanese people would know?)

I haven't gotten to do a presentation like this yet, but it looks really good to me. I think one thing I would make sure to mention is that ノーマル is a terrible word for straight and that gays in japan mostly use ノンケ meaning その気がない (so the straighties listening know the YURAI isn't like making fun of straight people). that's about all I got tho huep

Another thing you could touch on is Heteronormativity/representation in the media. I think it could be a good learning moment.

should i include a (very short) explanation about some issues non-straight couples/people face? this could include bighugs point Yes! Honestly I think this is more important and maybe easier for people to connect to than knowing about the flags (even though the flags are interesting and significant in their own way)

Honestly I think this is more important and maybe easier for people to connect to than knowing about the flags (even though the flags are interesting and significant in their own way) for the flags, i was gonna explain the colors of the rainbow flag and just show a bunch of flags for literally as long as it takes me to say "look at all these flags! each one is for a different identity. look at the sheer number/diversity! this is the +" and move on

Mhh this might not be appropriate for this presentation? But if it is, I think maybe a relevant topic to touch on during /issues LGBT+ people face today/, which is an argument I have seen Japanese politicians bring up especially recently, is the fact that they are apparently a threat to the perpetuation of the species, because...? I mean this argument is just so weird to me, since a lot of LGBT+ people, if not the majority of them, do want children, it has been found that they are just as good or bad parents as straight ones, and some of the people in the acronym (bisexual people in straight presenting relationships would be the easiest example) can have biological children? (even not considering adoption or other options)

I AM DOING MY PART FOR THE GAY AGENDA YALL That's awesome! It seems like it was really well-received, what would you say went over best, needed more explanation, etc? I did a mini-LGBTQ presentation awhile back as a part of my English class at my Shiyakusho, but I would love to make it a larger scale thing I can bring to Kouminkan visits as well! OMEDETOU!

I did a mini-LGBTQ presentation awhile back as a part of my English class at my Shiyakusho, but I would love to make it a larger scale thing I can bring to Kouminkan visits as well! OMEDETOU! this is a really good question but talking with my tanto we came up with
~we used charts(?) to show the identities (think the gender unicorn/genderbread person but with a dot on each scale) which seemed helpful
~we got pamphlets from the gender equality division which were really well put together and they could take them home ~after my explanation we had a video as review (for them and as a break for me) ~~we tried to keep it simple since this was a 101 type class. the same info was presented 3 times (by me, the pamphlets, and the video) so we dont think there was anything that needed more explanation
~it was technically a "US culture class" so adding what pride looked like in the US/my home state made it interesting
~we also got to explain allys (and got to give away Ally stickers/badges) which also became the study for many people
setting down ground rules at the start and right before the Q/A section was good (tho we also probably got lucky)
that said, we werent prepared for the questions about religion/Christianity and politics and LGBT+ (since it was 101 level). i still wont add those topics to this but i suggest putting at least a little thought/research into what religion and politics say about the community
i hope this helps!

As usual, here I come lurking for presentation ideas!
I'm doing an 50min LGBT presentation in Japanese for 200 JHS students and their teachers in like....a week? And you know, I got excited to do my part for the gay agenda but... My coworkers just told me that what I prepared is waaaaaay too hard for JHS students.
Which, fair. Now that I look at it again it does sound a bit overwhelming. And the main message of "it's okay to be yourself" is a bit lost in all the technical stuff. (panics)
Do you have any advice? Hell, even a lesson plan I could just... borrow? *dogeza* Anything to make this thing not too overwhelming (and ideally kinda a pleasant experience) for 中学1年から3年生
(I checked miscreative's plan above, and also what the other person that went to an alt's school did (both of which sound awesome btw), but if you guys have any other tips I'd be super grateful)
Once I get my head back in working order, I'll also update a more detailed plan (and give a report on how it went too.) but for now:
-Smol icebreaker ? (need to find a short one, that 200 people can do. save me) -Small presentation of terms (LGBT) -Gender Unicorn? (too hard? too long?) -That super cute short animated film -My own experience (coming out etc) // linking with being different and learning to be okay with that (かな?) -10min time for QA
(please excuse me if anything is unclear, i struggle with making logical links between my ideas)
