Hey guys! So I had some questions for anyone here who is a “two-timer” like me (as in did JET twice) and especially for those of you who were a JET ALT first and then a CIR. (I think Momij-komoreboy falls into this category?) But hearing from anyone who did the program twice would help me out a lot! 1) About the My Number situation: when I studied abroad after JET, there was this big fiasco because apparently they went ahead and created a new My Number for me when I already had one from before. I had to go to my local ward office like 3-4 times to get that fixed. So, when you did JET a second time, did anyone encounter any issues with this? Do they let you handle the paperwork by yourself when you get there, or do you need to let them know in advance so there are no duplicates made? 2) The JET ID number: does it change the second time? I’ve been going through the visa paperwork and I see that it’s required in some places, but now I’m wondering if I’ll be given a new one with my placement. 3) This one specifically applies to the ALT—>CIRs in the room: are you asked to do more teaching-related things than other CIRs? I see from browsing the forums that there are sometimes opportunities for things like school visits and eikaiwa type things, but I’m wondering if they factor in your previous experience as an ALT and end up assigning more of those to you as a result. 4) Also had a question about the number of contract years. I know this is maybe ESID a bit too, but I heard that they subtract the number of years you did JET before so that you end up with less available years for your contract, if that makes sense? So for example, if someone spent 2 years on JET before, then their second time they can only spend up to 3 years there instead of 5? Idk if that makes sense, but I’m also wondering, especially in the ALT—>CIR case, if they recognize that it’s a different visa type and thus give you those years back? 5) Last one, I promise! This one is based on something I heard from a guy “on the inside” (working at a CO) but I was wondering if there is a greater chance a 2nd timer would be given a more remote or rural placement? That’s what he told me, but I’m hoping I don’t run into that situation since I’m a non-driving candidate. x///x Sorry for the long post, and ten ants to anyone who takes the time to read it/answer! I really appreciate it orz

I really appreciate it orz I think I might be the only reJET on the forums actually >.< haha sorry! but I'll do my best to answer! 1) Since i turned in my mynumber 通知 card when I left I was just mailed the exact same one after I was here for a while. I also just avoided getting the actual card, since it expires with your zairyu card and that's too much of a pain for me lmao. as long as you explain the sitch to your supervisor or whoever is helping you at the mynumber division of your town you should be okay! (in my limited experience) 2)yep! you get a new jet number for your departure year 3)Nope! I have the same amount of teaching stuff as my pred did, tho my first supervisor used my ALT experience to reassure people that I know how to teach (I do not). If you don't want to teach I would definitely mention that you want to focus on other things. I did and they actually lowered my school visits a bit. 4)For the JET program you can do a total of 10 years or two full appointments, whichever comes first. So since I was an ALT for 3 years, if they kept doing the exception extensions for corona I could technically do 7 years here! Not likely, but technically hue. So April arrivals are basically the only ones who could get screwed in this hypothetical and only if they did 5 years their first time around. tl;dr you'll be fine and you can do the full 5 if you so choose 5)It's really hard to say with any certainty, you might get a more rural prefecture, but the only other reJET in our situation that I know at the moment was placed in the Zaki Kencho and she doesn't need to drive. I wouldn't count on your luck, it'll just depend on where the openings are I think.

All of these questions have been in the back of my mind bothering me for so long so it's great to finally get some answers! Great, yeah I kinda figured for the My Number thing that I could just explain it to whoever's helping out at the time while showing them that card, but my study abroad program went ahead and did so many things before we'd even arrived in Japan without letting us know so just wanted to make sure! #4 was a pretty big concern of mine too so I'm glad I was wrong about that one! Miyazaki? Cool cool! Btw slightly offtopic but is a kencho placement rarer than a shi/kuyakusho placement? Or are they all about the same?

thank you SO much for asking these questions! i’m also a a reJET (3 years ALT -> incoming CIR) so i was wondering these same things, particularly #4.
i also didn’t realize your mynumber card expires with your zairyu card and rushed to do it last month...now i need a new one in november 🙄
edit for point of clarification: i am also currently living in japan as a spouse of a japanese national, which is why i could (foolishly) apply for the mynumber card.

Oh good, I'm glad it ended up being helpful to someone else too! Aw man, does that mean you have to fly to your home country and back again for all the orientations, or are they doing away with that this year because of the pandemic?

I'm also doing JET again (ALT->CIR) so I found the questions helpful! I'm glad you asked since I'm just kind of lurking. I wonder what the situation is for the retirement pension?

You apply for it after leaving Japan, no matter how long you stay here and how many jobs you have. Currently, you get 5 years back.
