Hello, esteemed CIR folks. I am finally writing up the results of the survey I did on the translation practices and attitudes of Japanese staff in international and tourism departments around Japan. Over 300 such departments participated in the survey. (This was separate from the survey of CIRs that I posted here.) I'd like to share one or two interesting findings with people here, because I'm interested to get your 二円! First, the age-old issue of whether the translation contains the content of the original. (This question was from the last part of the survey, which unfortunately it seems many takers did not get to.) I asked both whether and why. Below are the results. Please share your honest reactions! Does the finished translation contain all the content of the original Japanese version?Always 17.39% Most of the time 41.30%Sometimes 15.22% Usually not 2.17% Never 23.91%If some original content has been excluded from the translation, is this because: (check all that apply) Because the information is not necessary for foreign residents 30.43% Because the information is not necessary for foreign tourists 4.35% Because it is difficult to translate properly 60.87%Because it is expensive to translate the entire source text 13.04% 完成しました翻訳は元の日本語版のすべての内容を含んでいますか?

This part frustrates me the most.... 一部の元のコンテンツが翻訳から除外されている場合、それは次の理由によるものですか 該当するものをすべてチェックしてください) – 外国人住民に必要な情報でないから 30.43% 7 – 外国人旅行者に必要な情報でないから 4.35% 1 – 適切な翻訳が難しいから 60.87% 14 – 原文のすべてを翻訳するのは費用がかかるから 13.04% 3 You used to see this more with stuff like English restaurant menus, but it is still notoriously the case for Japanese websites that have an "English" option. Click the English button, watch as 75% of the info that was on the site magically disappears Who the heck gets to decide which info is 「外国人住民・旅行者に必要な情報でない」? It certainly wasn't a 外国人.... : / The bottom two options are also crap excuses. Literally just hire a native speaking J>E freelance translator. They will find a 適切な翻訳, it's their job. If they're worried about the 費用, that must mean that they just aren't really that interested in getting more non-Japanese customers. Translation and localization is an investment, not a cost.

Click the English button, watch as 75% of the info that was on the site magically disappears I particularly find this to be the case with a lot of foreign websites and hence the reason why one should learn another language. Japanese websites just tend to be, as stated, particularly 'noteworthy' about this.

Is it possible that these respondents are in city offices that do not have CIR?
