Hello, esteemed CIR folks.
I am finally writing up the results of the survey I did on the translation practices and attitudes of Japanese staff in international and tourism departments around Japan. Over 300 such departments participated in the survey. (This was separate from the survey of CIRs that I posted here.)
I'd like to share one or two interesting findings with people here, because I'm interested to get your 二円!
First, the age-old issue of whether the translation contains the content of the original. (This question was from the last part of the survey, which unfortunately it seems many takers did not get to.) I asked both whether and why.
Below are the results. Please share your honest reactions!
Does the finished translation contain all the content of the original Japanese version?
Always 17.39%
Most of the time 41.30%
Sometimes 15.22%
Usually not 2.17%
Never 23.91%
If some original content has been excluded from the translation, is this because: (check all that apply)
Because the information is not necessary for foreign residents 30.43%
Because the information is not necessary for foreign tourists 4.35%
Because it is difficult to translate properly 60.87%
Because it is expensive to translate the entire source text 13.04%
