Hello, I’m a new JET (one month! I’ve been lurking in the forums) in the inaka where there isn’t a lot of LGBTQIA+ awareness and safe spaces. I was encouraged to brainstorm for events by my KA’s subleader and have received a lot of support from my CIE coworker with event planning. I want to create a semi-regular safe space for questioning youths and an educational/awareness space for the community to learn, but at the same time I don’t want to be inadvertently incriminating attendees of being queer because baseless discrimination is very real in conservative inaka.
I was wondering if there are any CIRs who have created/hosted LGBTQ events for their communities, and what advice you would give me to be as inclusive as I can without being problematically open. My CIE has mentioned the concern of parental complaints, so I don’t want to put any possible ALTs who may decide to help in a bad position.
I also don’t have a concrete idea of what I want to do. I’ve been brainstorming a lecture? a discussion panel? a round robin? with my CIE but I don’t want to be the only source of information for attendees because I don’t have all the answers to queer communities. I also don’t want to make attendees feel like they have to actively participate or share.
So far, I am in the process of making a flyer (very simple; tells what the acronym stands for and a few Japanese resource links) and plan to “teach” a very basic breakdown of gender, orientation, and attraction. Any advice or ideas would be very appreciated!! If this is completely a bad idea, please tell me too (>< Thank you~

Hello chiew and welcome to the forums I have done a few lgbt+ presentations already, some detailed in the following thread cirhomepage.boards.net/thread/1137/lgbt-presentationall of mine have been presentations, the first was part of a panel discussion with other CIRs about sex ed and lgbt in our countries. afterwards i made a LGBT 101 session with some US info (as its a part of my US culture lecture series) and I get to do it one last time next month (this time with more focus on pride/us culture and less about terms) i havent made a community space or anything but I am more than happy to brainstorm with you either here, in a PM, or in a phone call!

Not a very helpful input but I notice that they give a huge importance on human rights so connect LGBTQ+ with that when you write a description of it. I think it's nice that inaka is being proactive.

Yes! My CIE also mentioned going at the event from a SDG human rights angle, because there’s the possibility that the event won’t get passed if it’s deemed contradictory to the families and kids message that the city is pushing (big eye roll moment at the misconception but OITOITE). Thank you Miscreative for the thread link! I’ve looked through what was said about your presentations and I think if the safe space gets green lit for semi-regularly, then I could branch out discussion topics for future meetings. I think for now, I will have it be a free come and go space for LGBTQ topic eikaiwa and hope that it’ll gain some level of traction. Edit: My soup just green lit the event, and we’re going to test out the waters next month in time for Pride!!! I was thinking of once a month, but she approved for twice a month. So for now, my CIE suggested we try a weeknight and a weekend to see which is more accessible for attendees.

i asked soup if i could make a lgbtq flyer for the city homepage and she said yeah but under koksai kolyu. im feeling kind of proud of myself for telling her i didnt want to post it under koksai kolyu cause then lgbtq would possible get misrecognized as kaigai only. but then she said i wouldnt be able to post an info poster if it wasnt for a sien katsudo group.
and now idk where or how to go from here. pls advising

I think the flyer idea sounds really interesting. As for the contents, would it be like an overview of LGBTQ so people could become more familiar? I wonder if you could include something about misconceptions, e.g. "lgbtq isn't just a kaigai thing. here are some examples of lgbtq groups/events taking place in Japan, like Pride" to combat those kinds of misunderstandings

She said if there was a group, I could work with them but because there isn’t…, and its not like I can ask them to form a whole new group ): I was thinking I could branch off the SDGs but SDG falls under geopark at our cityhall, and I guess lgbtq rights doesn’t really fall under geopark??? Idk. I was looking at other city hall websites that have info posters available, and they had them available under 暮らし、市民協働、人権 etc subcategories. From how the other Japanese info posters are, it’d be what is lgbtq and how to not discriminate against members of the community. Some posters had misconceptions too, but they tied it to ijime.

That's interesting that the SDGs are only handled by your geopark office, it's supposed to be goals for all countries/municipalities to work towards. Maybe you could show your soup some of the examples you've been looking at on the other city hall websites and see if they'd agree to something similar.

SDGs were created by the UN, but it's pushed really hard by organizations like UNESCO so I can see why it's being handled by the geopark office. Unfortunately, there's not much specifically included in the SDGs about LGBTQ+ rights. If anything, you could use SDG 10 (Reduce inequality within and among countries). There are some targets that talk about inequalities and discrimination.

Village of 1500 here! I`ve facilitated the Power Flower activity to the young eikaiwa adult group, and included talking about attraction(sexuality, romantic) and gender(cis, trans,non-binary). I am adapting the Genderbread Person (LGBTQ poster) to be displayed in the Elementary and Jr High school (we dont have an HS)too! Privately, Ive made a hulemdo who vibed out to be accepting of diversity. They aren`t originally from the village though.

Yesterday was my third time hosting the lgbtq event, it’s officially called eikaiwa but I called it benkyokai on the august poster. I guess right now calling it a seminar would be more accurate. Since my first time fail, I’ve been able to lead some kind of thought process. Deep discussion hasn’t really happened but I’m content if I see participants taking notes and nodding their heads silently hue.
In terms of the handouts and worksheets I’ve made and used; specifically, I use the genderbread pdf that I translated (the gender unicorn has an official jpn ver), a version of the acefiles from nijikou that i edited → nijikou.com/事業内容/オリジナルテンプレート-資料/ and terms worksheets that I made from scratch.
My first event, I talked about sogie, split attraction model, and gender. It was a lot to be cramming into an hr while also hoping for discussion, so I’m going to split those topics up in future sessions. My second and third event, I talked about the 8 greek categories of love and basically trying to work my way into the cognitive understanding of monogamy, introducing aroace relationships, and the social construct of marriage/childrearing.
I have jobrainbow.jp, outjapan.co.jp, and anone.me linked as resources. I personally really like anone cause it’s a very extensive, tho maybe not comprehensive, quiz that breaks down your sexuality, orientation and gender. I think it’s a good first step for anyone who’s questioning.

Hey folks, I'm trying to come up with 2 activities for ~13 year olds about the SDG of Reducing InequalityI've done short raise-your-hand type quizzes before but I've been told my presentation is scheduled during club activity time and they wanna keep everyone active. I've also been told the number of students could be somewhere between 50 - 100 (TBC) which makes things significantly harder rip Obviously I'll be bringing the Gay Agenda(TM) and will propose the Genderbread worksheet to my soup but as for activities that teach about equality in general I'm stumped Any ideas would be much appreciated! Also, the previous posts here have been a big help for the presentation in general so thanks

Also, the previous posts here have been a big help for the presentation in general so thanks If you have access to a larger space, the Privilege Walk Exercise might be a tool to raise awareness in the youth. Everyone will stand in a horizontal line in the middle of the room. All participants will have their eyes closed until the end of the exercise. As the facilitator reads a statement or question, the participant will step forward or step back if it applies to them. If anyone feels too uncomfortable to take a step, they have the option to remain still.
Examples to start with:
If you are right-handed, take one step forward
If your sex or race is widely represented in the U.S. Congress, take one step forward.
If you have difficulty finding hair products, make-up for your skin complexion, or a hairstylist/barber in your current
community, take one step back.
Sourced from: www.eiu.edu/eiu1111/Privilege%20Walk%20Exercise-%20Transfer%20Leadership%20Institute-%20Week%204.pdfI participated in this activity in High School, and it made me realize things like, being a light skinned Person of Color is a privilege.
