Hi everyone, I'm killing time at work translating Japanese Wikipedia pages that relate to my prefecture into English. This is for our prefecture's regional karuta game, which they take really seriously here for some reason. In the official rules, a 【空読み】 keeps getting mentioned, but I'm having trouble understanding what that actually means. If anyone could enlighten me, I'd apprciate it!

I thinking kara-yomi means that they read the poem, but it's an empty reading because you're not supposed to get the card at that time. Considering the explanation above, they read it to fill time between the cards (In regular karuta, a kara-fuda is a card that's read, but that isn't actually in play)
This is all conjecture though ^^;

There's a karuta sport anime/manga/drama called Chihayafuru which i think would help you understand the entire flow of karuta! Jokes aside, from my understanding 空読み is the same as the "on your marks.. get set..." and the "GO!!" is the 本読み where the players reach for the Karuta cards.

He said the players are too good and will definitely grab the card before it's done being read, so essentially the reading of the card twice is for the tournament referee and other staff's benefit, to give more prep time before the next card is read

I can't say I'm surprised Thanks for the info! I've only played casually with students when I worked as an ALT, never in an actual tournament before haha. They take it so seriously
