Hello everyone, I'm an incoming CIR. I was sent the signup form for the CLAIR Japanese Language courses and I aced the placement test. Assuming most CIRs are N2 or above, how helpful is the advance course(which they say is N3 level) really for CIR work? If it is really generic I don't think I want to sign up for a 6 month course... Thank you for your input!

Thank you! I am definitely interested in the translation and interpretation course, hopefully I can enroll sometime in the future.

I took it as an ALT back in 2017, and the course was barely an N3 level at its hardest. I was better off reviewing my textbooks from uni (I brought them with me on JET), and even for ALTing the course wasn't particularly helpful. I'm not sure if the content changed much since then though

T&I (translation and interpretation) is much better... in a way. The translation part is pretty bad, but most people agree that the in-person interpretation part is good (although some people have had bad experiences too). It's nice to do it to have on your resume eventually

Thank you for your input! I'd consider my Japanese ability to be on the lower end when compared to your average CIR and I find the Advanced Course quizzes helpful for revising the basics and the odd bit of new vocab By that I mean I gave up on the actual videos and textbook and just crawl through the quizzes, and revise the bits I got wrong. The rest is too slow and tedious for me If you're a very confident N2 or above it might be a waste of time but I find the quizzes handy for when you have down time at work
