Hi everyone,
I am an aspiring CIR, and as part of the application process I am required to submit an SOP in Japanese. Though I have an N2 certificate, I have not written an SOP in Japanese before and I am not sure if there are any major differences in how I need to structure the essay (when compared to writing in English). Further, if there are any tips specific to writing an SOP for JET I would be grateful to hear about that as well.
Any other tips/suggestions are also welcome! Thank you.

What country are you applying from? I'm from the US and we only had to submit one in English.

I haven't had to write an SOP in Japanese either, and since I'm also from the US I can't give better insight as to what differences there may be for Indian CIRs
but I feel like JET in general looks for someone who is flexible, open to new ideas, and has at least a decent idea of what they want to do in the future (and how they will utilize their time on the program to reach that goal, preferably with it having a clear connection to Japan)
could you try working your SOP in English first, then translating it after?

hi, my co-CIR is an Indian CIR and they wrote up a reply to your question: Hi! I'm a CIR from India in my second year and I had to write an SoP in Japanese for my application. There isn't a specific format you need to follow; a single-page essay in Japanese about why you want to be a CIR and what you hope to achieve should be enough. I don't think you can go wrong by following the same essay structure you would use for an English SoP. I did the same thing!

I don't think you can go wrong by following the same essay structure you would use for an English SoP. I did the same thing! Thanks so much for the guidance! If you don't mind I have a couple of other follow-up questions:
1. Is there a standard font size to be used? I couldn't find any specific instructions related to formatting except the following: "Typed, single-sided, double-spaced on A4 paper (210mm x 297mm) or letter-sized paper (8.5in x 11in), not exceeding two pages. This page limit must be strictly observed." After double-spacing, my SOP is exceeding two pages, so knowing what font size is generally used would be extremely helpful.
2. Is writing in the application form alright, or do the fields have to be typed in?
In addition, as an Indian CIR applicant I do have a few other queries (unrelated to the above), so it would be wonderful if we could connect over LinkedIn/email for a chat. Please let me know if that would be possible. Thanks!

Hi, this is the Indian CIR who replied to your question above.
1. I just checked my own SoP, and it's two pages long, A4-sized and double-spaced. I don't know the exact font I used because the default font is different on the computer I used and my current device. The font size, however, is 12. I recommend using a serif font like MS Mincho at size 12 and limiting the length of the text to two pages.
2. I would suggest typing instead of writing, to make reading easier for the selection committee.
Yes, I would be glad to answer your questions! Here's my email: toyama.cir.india@gmail.com
