Hi all, I have to make a presentation and teach a group of volunteers basic English soon. Here are the defintions volunteers: mostly retired old people but also housewives who volunteer at the tourism information center to help tourists find their way etc etc basic english : easy to remember english that is related to tourism
I just want to do a quick survey - what phrases are most useful to KNOW and USE when dealing with tourists? Note that this lesson is one off (it may be continued sometime in winter but that's not confirmed so i am dealing with it as a single lesson) so complicated english or long phrases are useless. Also most people are old so they have very terrible negative ideas regarding learning english.
for example, I thought it would be good to teach them to say "thank you" in different languages (english, mandarin, korean) but other than that, I'm drawing a blank. (even teaching stuff like directions needs more than one lesson!!!) what should I do for 2 hours?!
PLUS:
are there any taboos in your country? e.g. you should not greet someone in a certain way for fear of offending them this lesson would also be part cultural "how to deal with foreign tourists"
I hope my explanation is a little clear. Thank you!

"Enjoy the rest of your stay!" "This is a map of the town." "You'll never get up there in those shoes."

When I prepare for traveling, I usually try to learn: -numbers 1-10, 100, 10,000 if necessary for local currency -hello, thank you, please, sorry -how much -excuse me (whatever is used to call a waiter/staff and what to say when you want to push past someone) -I don't speak ___, do you speak English -good/bad -where is__? left, right, straight
You'd be surprised how much 片言 you can get away with with that list. I had many conversations in Korea with this set. Chinese girl: America? me: America! Korea? Chinese girl: China. America Olympic good! me: China Olympic good! ----- me: excuse me, where is (train station name)? random Korean dude: (Train station name?) ~~~~Koreankoreankorean~~~ me: uhhh Korean (gesture for little). English? dude: English (gesture for little). Station (point), ~~~~, 2~~left ~~~, station. me: 2 left station? dude: left, straight 200 meters, left, station. me: thank you!
So maybe a "片言 is OK" type conversation list? It's hard to remember whole sentences but single words are OK.
As for taboos, the only thing I can really think of is touching people. Some cultures don't like being touched on the head, and even Americans/Europeans would be like "why is this old lady grabbing my arm." There's no real reason to touch foreign tourists but just in case, it would be nice to avoid an awkward situation...
