Hey there,
I know that this is REALLY early, but I'm just wondering...
Has anyone started preparing a personal statement/statement of purpose for the 2016 application?

(current JET so I can't answer your question but) If you're a prospective JET and already working on the application, way to be on top of things! えらい~

I'll probably kind of use the same one as last year, with a few changes... Unless I decide to switch to ALT? I think it's a great idea to prepare this early, this way you can bother only about making it better later.

I've read a lot of examples but I'm still struggling hue.
My draft just has a bunch of random paragraphs at the moment.
Any advice?

I think the most important part is to show what you can do for the program and not just what it can do for you, and fit a few examples while still being to the point. Maybe start by making a coherent text out of your paragraphs and then have it read by a few people to see what you can prune out?

(my personal opinion of) things to include:
+ why you want to be a CIR (imho, fewer reasons about childhood anime, and more reasons about childhood japanese hulemdos/neighbours/homestays etc seem to go down well) + why you think you would be a good CIR + how you are good at both sharing your own culture and how you are also open/flexible/adaptive to learn from others (交流=/=一方通行 etc etc) + why you can be a valuable addition to an office (bright personality, hard-working, punctual, respectful and diligent, other skills such as other languages, familiarity with programming, that kind of thing) + how being a CIR can help you and your future career (bonus points if future career aspirations include working in japan afterwards and/or going back home to do something japan-related after JET)
as a PA i read a lot of (admittedly mostly ALT) application forms, and the ones with more reasons grounded in reality and with realistic ambition sound a lot better than the ones gushing about their sailor moon era when they were a child, but the fact that those applications are even getting to my desk in the first place probably means that saying that isn't really a deal breaker over at CLAIR.

I addressed each point with a list of my qualities, experiences, and ideas. I wrote out paragraphs for each of my ideas with no character or word limit, and put them together to address the points on the list like the one above. With these body paragraphs, I made one long essay that was initially like four or five pages. I looked for repetition and decided where the repeated content was more appropriate. I cut out a lot of the narrative and the gratuitousness. After getting it down to approximately the right length, I tied it all together to make it flow. Then I just tinkered with that two-page essay for a while until I had what I wanted. It was mechanical and airtight, and I got through.

To counteract the above posts:
I wrote it as a complete stream of consciousness because I did it at easily my most busiest period in my whole life up to this point.
I have seen the most otaku-y peeps on JET with the social skills of a spoon and also some mean nasty people (very few) however, I know what I think helped my stand out in my interview was my "Culture is great. We should share it" long shpeel. They didnt give a hoot about other skills, office manners, personality etc. Emphasize the culture thing.

It doesn't have to be a project as long as it's good and/or sincere. I have also met some awful people on JET.

Just put it out of your head until you hear about interviews. It won't do you any good to dwell on it, it's not like you can change anything at this point, and it will just stress you out!
Easier said than done, though, I know...

Oh yeah, this is nothing compared to the wait after the interview... or you know, the interview itself. For now it's more of a short-term "I just brought in my package, and I hope everything is fine with it" stress, hue.
