For some time I was thinking it might be cool to take the 漢検 and actually get good at writing.
Then I failed the N1 for a second time and decided I might be better off avoiding all standardized Japanese language tests forever

Be good at Japanese.
As dumb as that sounds though, it's probably the best advice for someone who's already finished hardcore studying. Make sure you understand the weird grammar points that may crop up (they probably won't though) and get your KANZIs down. I hear the 完全マスター books are good as far as textbooks go (I used the, frankly rubbish, 総まとめ ones and still got a good score so I think it's more about knowledge/familiarity with Japanese).

I bought those 完全マスター books for every section and went through ALL of them. Paid off because I was really close to a perfect score.
But honestly I think if you just take lots of practice tests that will help? Or just buy a book for the parts you are least comfortable with (I recommend kanji or grammar).

Around how much were those books? Each? Total?

Err honestly I don't remember but probably 1000-2000 yen each? I seem to recall it being like 6000 yen altogether but that was like three years ago so I can't be too sure. -.-'
You only need like 55% correct to pass the JLPT, also. Or something like that.

I found the 完全マスター series very helpful. 総まとめ is really more for review, while 完全マスター has some more examples and such. I think I used their grammar and reading books, which were my weak points. There was an unrelated N1 kanji book I used which I loved because it had periodic tests. It had a kind of yellow/orange cover...

I really don't feel like taking it again but probably will because my pride won't allow it otherwise.
JLPT people are taking too much of my precious yen

What's the best program to use in order to make the sound recordings for the Interpretation part? I'm really not good with computers so something simple is good. Also I think this was already asked but does if anyone's tried doing the test in Chrome yet, does it work??

Well, sure we take tests every year to ultimately graduate. But I was more getting at the fact I didn't retake any years (people manage to fail alarmingly easily in the UK despite the fact the passing grade is 40%).

My office used a handheld recorder, the kind people do press interviews with and stuff (I think). If you can get the files off then I imagine even a smartphone could do it. Otherwise I like Audacity for all sorts of sound things - I think it's free software as well?

We don't (at least at university). I don't think I've ever heard of anybody retaking a year at college, though there are plenty of people who drop out. (But that is just my experience) Also shimanchu I also failed my driving test the first time, haha. -.-'

For the test, do we just do it in our own time or do we do it and at work? I feel like I read somewhere that they have to supervise us so we do it at work but maybe I that up?

I did a paper test and my supervisor handled everything about turning it in, so I can't help you there. Anybody who took it online have an idea? Edit: caic I did it at work, with my supervisor being the proctor (?)/Eternal Overlordistrator of the test.

(But that is just my experience) Could be the difference in tuition fees? When I went, it was still "only" 3000 pounds/year, where as now it's more like 9000 (getting closer to the US rate), so I always felt people who shouldn't really be at uni just kind of went cause they felt like they "should". Example: We had a guy in our first year for Japanese who failed at a different uni and then also failed the first year at Manchester. That's probably a lot more common in languages mind you. Most people could probably manage to bluff their way to 40% doing stuff like history etc.

Then he came to manchester to do jap and failed first year again. Then he finally passed first year to just go on and fail second year and give up Dunno if you ever met him. Probably not

My brother failed 2-3 times in a row and had to take beta blockers just to keep his crap in check for the one time he managed to pass. He wasn't usually a nervous person. Maybe it was the exhaust fumes?
Edit: Wait, so new Eternal Overlords cheeky huleezued damn and not crap?
