Hi everyone!
I've been asked to prepare a Halloween event in Tochigi in mid-October for about 20 adults in my area. I originally wanted to see if we could make jack-o-lanterns with small pumpkins that would be available in the season (even if they aren't exactly the same as American ones), but we're having a hard time figuring out if it's possible, since I was told Japanese pumpkins tend to be very hard, even though they have thinner skin, and we don't know what we'll be working with exactly until closer to the time.
Has anyone tried to do a pumpkin carving event in the past, and do you have any advice? Thanks!

Hmm aren't Japanese pumpkins green? Not that it would be a problem, really.
I don't suppose there are any pumpkins available now you could try it on?
(I have not done a pumpkin carving event, sorry. Also never actually carved a pumpkin myself, for that matter)

I posted this to a couple other pages, and got a lot of good advice very quickly, so I'll share it in case anyone else finds themselves in the same predicament! Many people confirmed that you have to be quick to get the American-style pumpkins, otherwise Japanese pumpkins will be nearly impossible to carve. On the other hand, using persimmons was recommended, and this seems like a great idea! If they're not yet ripe, you can hollow them out; if they already are ripe and too soft, use markers! en.rocketnews24.com/2014/10/31/happy-halloween-time-to-decorate-your-persimmon/

Ooh persimmons! If I ever have to do a Halloween event I will remember that.
