Still not sure if it's the beauty of Otsu necessarily, or the convenience of being 2 stops from Kyoto... my apartment itself looks right out on an Aeon parking garage... *slightly bitter* It's all about the convenience, baby. I wish I could see Aeon...(sighs) My RYUUGAKUSEI days were in front of one...so convenient. Exactly. I wish I was that close to an Aeon, and I'd even take the crappy view...

(no car, slow walker, especially when I am carrying a lot of things) I miss AEON ;n;

I look out onto other people's houses with some nice trees and things in the distance so I'm lucky.
...but on the other hand I regularly hear the neighbourhood cats going on dates with each other. Loudly. In the middle of the night.

My views aren't bad. On the one side I have... my landlady's house, but rice fields behind that (and it's only one story while I'm on the second floor so I can see over it.) On the other side I have a few houses and then a mountain behind that. I basically live right at the foot of the mountain, so my view out that window is of the houses going up the side of the mountain.
My old apartment had a lovely view of the sea and Mt. Unzen, but it was on a stupid little spit of land that took ages to get off of. It was super inconvenient. Also the stairwell was covered in sea cockroaches.

I enjoy that the text book hasn't been changed since 2000. Seems like I get to work with a piece of history...haha I got in, too. Yay.

miscreative: if you find doing the translation practice in the books helps you, do it. (I found it supremely unhelpful, especially compared with the translations I do on a day to day basis in my office.) If you are like me, simply skip to the "test" portions and only do those, referring back to the examples as necessary -- in my experience, they tend to go for the answers that are similar to what's taught in the book rather than, er, liberal (read: more natural but not 直訳) translations. Same goes for the interpretation exercises. But the KENSHUU at JIAM is so, so, so helpful and worth it!!

ok actually it came in the post just now. But I just realised I have no idea what I'm doing? When do we start doing it from? How often do we upload the homeowork stuff and where do I find the homework stuff? I'm just confused..

How often do we upload the homeowork stuff and where do I find the homework stuff? I'm just confused.. From what I understand, the book is broken down into 20 lessons. 4 weeks, 5 days, one lesson each day. You don't turn anything in but your exam at the end of each book (the first one is 11/11). From what I can tell, read(skim, へll, ignore if you want) the examples in the book and do the practice problems (a translation from Japanese, to Japanese, and an interpretation from J=>E). What notes you take are up to you. you (or your super) should have received an email with instructions on how to use the site, including how to upload your test (which is very similar to the test you took to get in) This is just what i have gathered. Senpai/ other people in the course, does this sound right?

Yeah, I got an email with a pdf that showed step-by-step how to upload the test files. The same email also included your username and password. If you log into the website, book 1 also has two 事前説明 files that have the same information as the pdf. The pdf also had all of the test deadline listed. Like miscreative said, the first is 11/11.

OK I reread that email and it makes more sense now. I guess I'll take it as start from monday then 4 weeks of book one than a week for test then start over. Basically all we need to do is do the test at the end on time and going through the rest of the book is up to us. OK i think I get it.

This is a stupid question (and I haven't received the book yet) but if we are too busy to do one lesson a day, can we just do multiple lessons on days we have more free time? I don't know how much free time I'll have in the UK.
...this is maybe the most moronic question I've ever asked on CIRHP cos I'm pretty sure they don't care as long as we do the test by the 11th of November but just checking that we're not meant to be submitting other things as well as we go through the lessons.

You only have to submit the tests at the end, you technically don't have to do anything else. You can pace the lessons however you want or even not do them at all. No worries gal

Same goes for the interpretation exercises. But the KENSHUU at JIAM is so, so, so helpful and worth it!! I think I am in the very very small minority when I say this, but I read through all the examples and everything because it was helpful for me to see different ways to translate things (also I liked reading the passages because they were about all sorts of vaguely interesting things). Also it let me know what kind of phrases/grammar they would expect to see in the test. I am pretty sure I stopped actually doing the translation practice after day like 2, though.

Somewhat similarly to snell, I did actually read a lot* of the examples to see what they did (especially when I was confused about what kind of format/phrasing they wanted on the tests). I also spent a lot of time in the glossary (or whatever they called it) to see their translations for certain terms.
...I just didn't do any of the translation practice exercises because >60% of my job is translation of a level above the ones presented in the books and was already tired of translating after work. orz
*Unlike snell, I confess that I did not read them all. I do remember the weather one specifically, though I have no idea why.

Our work blocks the page to access tests and such, so I either have to spend my own time at do it at home, or ask that they unblock the page. And I wonder which one is more likely to happen. *eyeroll*
