Suddenly remembered I was supposed to be working on this and read the first lesson. What is with these super short sentences? That is not how Japanese people write at all...

I had a similar experience to snell and sparkles. I recommend at least going through it to make sure you don't miss any vocab/grammar that you didn't know. And if you don't do a lot of translation/interpretation it could be good practice (though I recommend you do it twice, once the natural way, once their way, if you care about your grade). I got perfect scores on most of my E->J, but on my J->E I got a point off because I wrote "woke up at 8" instead of "woke up at 8 in the morning" like anyone would mistake that for 8PM... but the Japanese said 午前8時 so.

Please tell me that I am not the only one who has barely looked at the book? Haven't opened it again since the day I got the books. I'm a terrible person. Also I just got handed envelope with book 3 and book 4 about 5 minutes ago so I feel extra bad

I am just gonna skim a few of the chapters tonight? mark down the grammar I dont know well enough? maybe some important looking vocab? that is only if i dont get suddenly sleepy the moment i think about opening the book again >>;

I've been doing it off and on...
Mostly because a) I have a fair amount of downtime off and on, and b) my job gives me very little translation or interpretation practice, so I take what I can get.

I got the books right before I left for the UK and I didn't want to pack them knowing I probably would be too busy to study. And this weekend I was too tired and jetlagged to be productive. So I haven't even started the books :/ I'll start them... tomorrow ~_~

I think this has been asked here before... maybe even by me, but is it one test per book? Multiple tests? Are the tests in the book or online? Do I need to submit the exercises at the end of each lesson?
Sorry for my many and varied annoying questions.

...oh wait I found the test at the back of the book. ...I probably should have, err, looked at the contents page earlier.
.......so how about that weather we're having?

I'm on like week 2 day 4 or something. Only like a week behind. Not so bad Me too! I find I can only do it about every other day so I try to get two or three days done when I get a chance. By the way - what's the dress code for this thing? It says suits for the opening and closing ceremonies, but for the normal classes it says casual is fine, but... how casual? Like jeans?

It's still work so I would go with business casual (I think that's what I wore). Like the normal stuff I would wear to work, on non-interpreting days.

I was surprised by the casual thing, but I suppose they do all sorts of seminars there.

Is it okay to discuss some of the homework here?
I am doing Week 3 - Day 4 right now, looking at the line: 「というより、明るければ明るいほど良いという考えが強いのではなかろうか。」
The book translates it as: "Among them [electrical appliance manufactures], "the brighter, the better" seems to be a more dominant way of thinking.
The notes says it doesn't translate というより and emphasizes the meaning with "more dominant" which I get, since it's like "rather~" but I am having trouble putting the whole sentence together. Maybe because I've never really encountered the verb なかる, I don't get how it's being addressed in the translation. Any input?

I don't know this word or haven't got that far in the book (well done) but I am posting to say hello. You should join and make an account, there is a lot more to see and do as a non-guest and we are really fun and hardly ever bite. of course you can talk about homework here. You can discuss anything hereeeeee.

As long as it's not the test that's probably fine right?
It's not a separate verb, it's putting 「のではないか」 into a (である?) form like だろう -> であろう

I made an account, no longer lurking. c:
And thank you snell_mouse, that makes sense. Sometimes I wish these books would go into a little more detail in their translation choices instead of just doing line for line with only some having comments.

Also I'm not a fan of some of the English translations. They often seem stiff and very much as if a non-native speaker translated them. (Although sometimes I will admit that they're much better than mine.)
Like one I did today (Week 2 Day 5 I think) used the word システムキッチン. I've never heard "system kitchen" before, so I looked it up and sure enough it's wasei eigo.
And yet in their translation they used "system kitchen."
I feel like that's just sloppy.

Haha yeah....there's a reason (many reasons) people complain about the textbooks. But pretty much everybody raves about the 研修 in that place with the Lake and NOTHING ELSE, so look forward to that!
