Hello all my PA CIRs! I need some advice/examples of what you're doing.
I'm the only 英語圏 CIR in my prefecture and the automatically designated main PA (overseeing about 30 ALTs). This apparently is the way it's been done since the dinosaurs roamed here, as I've come to learn (or more or less assume) in the 2ish months I've been here. Despite that, they have never made any set guidelines for what counts as "work" under the PA duties and not just me "being a nice person" (considering most of it takes place AFTER all the ALTs get off work, and therefore mostly outside of my normal work times as well).
Example:
My 1st month, one ALT was particularly struggling. The head of the ALTs in the BOE contacted my supervisor who then told me to do everything I could to help him, since he'd been getting extremely stressed out. This included issues with getting a cell phone.
Long story short, I had to spend 2 hours of my time outside of normal work hours to help him figure out his cell phone thing.
Then I went into work asking for the 代休 sheet to fill it in, and my supervisor was like, "...what? Uh, no, you just did that because you're a nice person, plus no one was there to actually witness you doing it..."
I was originally too stunned and not wanting to start arguments so early in the contract year, but I went home and thought about it, and argued my case the next day (while I agree if I had to I would have grudgingly done that because I'm a nice person, I was specifically told by my boss to do this, and this should fit under PA duties, considering they incredibly vague, and in any case this was helping him adjust to life/whatever it vaguely stipulates as a PA duty. Furthermore, all of it was done on Facebook messenger, so I have our entire conversation documented--what was said at what time--although the fact that he has a working cell phone now should be proof enough). They ended up giving in and let me claim my 2 hours of 代休.
Considering that was just the 1st month, I'm pretty uneasy about how this will play out in the future. (I almost had to escort another ALT in a different town to the hospital because she got an eye infection, but I am most unwilling to take that out of my 年休.) I asked them for us to set some ground rules, and they said they would after I went to the PA conference last month and brought back all the stuff. I did, and I read through it, and reminded them again, but I keep getting the, "Oh yeah, we should do that" with no real action taken.
I want to push this actively and smartly. I guess I'm not really sure what ground rules (do you need someone to sign something for proof? Do you need someone to call the supervisor directly? Are there some things that count while others don't? etc.) are possible for this (clearly the honor system won't fly too much in my case), so I'd love to hear from the rest of you and your experiences.
How does your CO handle your PA affairs?
