We had one of these on the old forum and I liked it because people helped people and it was nice and supportive. Who out of yall is thinking about Postgraduate Research?

I'm thinking about going back to school after one more year in Japan (since it's too late to find schools/apply now for next year). I've kind of wanted to be an Asian Studies professor in the US for a while now, but I'm worried that I'll go through all the effort of getting a PhD and then not be able to get a job or it'll be too much pressure or something :x
That said I have no idea about how to even go about finding a school.

I would like to go to grad school but there are too many subjects I would be interested in studying but not enough justification to pick one so. -.-'

This thread is gonna be so buried here. Wow............ Oh well.......
I feel similar to you. I really wanna be a lecturer. Its something I feel like I could be half competent at and I will apply to schools but I dont even know when people start making contact with professors. Is now like scarily obsessively too early or is it like JET where its like already too late.

Yeah but Im gonna head in a linguisticy direction so I should slot into DCU OK. And DCU and UL are both absolutely fantastically good for languages. And they have none of that awful pretentiousness of older universities which I hate.

I'm thinking of going into IT/Computer Science for grad school in Australia. Eventually I'd like work on software localization/development, although I'm also interested in any position that requires en/jp language skills.

I'm interested in going to school for linguistics, probably in the Netherlands (because of EU tuition and dual citizenship privilege.)
Although I still don't actually know what I would want to do with that degree...

I studied at Leiden University and I know many people who did linguistics there; sounds like a good option!

My goal is to teach myself how to make really simple apps in the next couple of years, then go into a graduate diploma that leads to a masters. I majored in International business and Japanese

That's where I want to go. :D Thanks for your confirmation that it's awesome. I want to go after I finish JET, so probably beginning fall 2017. Great! It's a nice city, close to bigger cities like Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam, and there's loads of great lecturers. Just be prepared for a terrible Eternal Overlordistrative situation, with a grade-registration system that's so bad it should warrant the firing of all those involved in its ungodly conception. All that aside, great college!

Graeme Howard you can definitely be a computer man without formal education. It's a field where practical knowledge and experience usually trump credentials. It's not too hard to teach yourself either, assuming you are trying to get into programming or whatever. Hell, even if you don't want to do it as a long-term career, studying some stuff is a good idea as there are always going to be jobs if you really need one. Look at me for a good example of this. Also I've been thinking about graduate school for a long time but the questions of where and how keep me stumped. I'd like to study IR/political science but I don't think it's a field that's worth going into debt for. I don't consider myself to be good enough to get funded for a good US program as they are hyper-competitive. I looked into European schools a bit but they are either expensive for non-EU citizens or have the majority of their non-STEM classes in a language I don't understand. My best bet might be applying for the MEXT scholarship to study here in Japan. It's something I've been researching for awhile now and might try going for it next year. But I'm not sure yet. While I have no issues with living in Japan for a few more years to study, I've heard not so great things about the rigor of Japanese universities (though admittedly this is for undergrad programs) and am worried that the time and effort spent getting a degree wouldn't amount to much. Also the MEXT application process is long and terrible and would involve me flying out to the US just to do an interview even though it's a Japanese scholarship. That alone makes me hesitant.

Hold on... there's such thing as going into computer science stuff for a graduate degree without a relevant undergrad degree?
mindblown.gif
Getting a broad-area Japanese degree for my undergrad degree is one of my biggest life RAGRETS.
I hardly learned a thing in those classes, I'm already fluent in Japanese, and I don't need a piece of paper to prove it.
I would absolutely love to be able to go into something IT/programming related, because in the US it's basically required in order to get yourself even close to middle class living.
Also cuz I wubz me some vidya games and wanna make some

Same here, and International Business at my Uni was not much better. I think it's easier to get into a postgrad computer science course in Australia because the market isn't as competitive as the US. Undergrad degree in computer/IT definitely helps, and for some universities it's a requirement but a lot of our top universities have a backdoor.

Yeah, I might need to look outside the US for something like that.
Otherwise take Ruffles advice and study on my own..... Where the へll to begin though

It might be worth it to find a correspondence course or similar. It would probably give you a more rounded background than trying to do it all on your own.

Hey beautiful peeps!
I need to start thinking really hard about my masters and I have decided to enter a translation course in Dublin.
Problem is I have never studied translation. At my undergrad uni the teachers did literature and the non teachers did transaltion. I was a teacher so I have read lots of French books and a couple of Japanese books.
What do people do for their undergrad thesis/dissertation in translation.
I was wondering if I could compare a translation of a book across three languages (English French and Japanese) and analyse the way the inconsistencies or change in register in the HONYAK.
I know that when I read Norweigan Wood in English and Japanese the language seemed very plain in both languages. It was really readable and nice but in French it was this ugly literary nonsense that was so off putting I stopped reading it.
What did any of you guys do for undergrad themes.

I'm pretty lost too, but I've worked out I should probably learn Java if I want to get into android apps, and so I've started the java course on codeacademy. I've also downloaded Android Studios, the app development tool. I haven't done much other than that tbh, I need to get on to it...

Hold on... there's such thing as going into computer science stuff for a graduate degree without a relevant undergrad degree? My degree was not in anything tech-related and look at me now. Admittedly I did have relevant アルバイト experience, but I'm mostly self-taught over the years simply because I like computers and wanted to know more.
