So none of this has actually happened yet, but here it goes:
I got a job offer from a teeny tiny (2 staff members) but fairly major (like they've worked with the UN and the US Dept. of State and all that) NPO to basically work for the minimum living wage. On top of the normal Eternal Overlordistrative and day-to-day NPO cause activities, they'd like me to basically be an international development/fundraising and communications 窓口, because they can't English and are all 困ったed. Pay is low and unnegotiable now (they're still so small that they don't seem able to afford to negotiate), but they say if I raise enough money, I can get pay increases through that.
This description so far may sound super cool to some people, and have others running screaming out the door. But putting that aside:
It's a cause I'm very passionate about, and the boss has 2 books out already (she made her living before this year through the proceeds from her books, and this is the first year she's actually getting a salary through the NPO work). I've read one, and think it would be very doable for me to translate it. However, I have reservations about doing this as part of my normal job, basically ~for free~. I'm not sure if they would be expecting that if I brought it up (it could seem like they could, given the international development part of my job, although nowhere it includes book translation), but as I said, I don't want to do that extra work that could get only the boss extra cash for no real credit other than my name being on a cover. On the other hand, I also doubt they'd be able to afford it to be translated (although there's already a Taiwanese Mandarin version out, it seems), and I don't want to be an アース.
So I have this weird hypothetical dilemma:
Getting credit where credit is due and potentially being kinda selfish vs. promoting a cause I care about for no real credit
Any thoughts on this? Similar experiences? ...I should probably just ask them, but that aside too...
