My city is creating a new video, and I was asked for my opinion on the following: The video introduces 6 themes of the city and at the moment have been categorized as follows "Art Spot" "Power Spot" "Flower Spot" "Night View Spot" "Winter Activity Spot" "Jozankei Spot"
Clearly, they are looking to tie all the themes together.
I want to ask for your opinions! How would you rename these if it were you? I was just given this earlier, so I haven't actually come up with anything yet but an example would be "Winter Delights" for the winter activity spot or "Artistic Pleasures" for art spot.. UGH, I am horrible at coming up with names like this. Help please?

just wondering what some of those mean...what are "power spot," "winter activity spot," (winter sports?) and "jozankei spot"? (from Google I'm guessing the last one is an onsen)

All right, let's brainstorm these.
You said there's a video? Is there any way you can sneak us some screen captures so we can see exactly what the context is? Failing that, if you could at least try and describe it in some way, that would be great. It's important that what you decide on matches up well with what's on-screen.

thanks sape! power spot is waseieigo パワースポット which in itself is extremely hard to translate? and winter activity is not limited to sports as it includes stuff like, snowshoe walking or sledding or riding a snowraft? and jozankei spot is like you found, an area - they want to introduce that area.
I think what they are doing is grouping the attractions in Sapporo into areas? So like, Areas related to Art, Areas related to Flowers, Areas/Places where you can relax, unwind (thus, power spot) or is slightly mystical.. and the Jozankei Area?
The use of the word スポット has been translated from Japanese as is. It's convinient in Japanese to just classify stuff into スポット which I'd translate as "spots" in english, but it's just not very attractive in a video meant to showcae the 魅力 of a place, you know?

"Power spot" obviously makes no sense to native speakers, so I tend to replace it with whatever seems appropriate at the time. If they want to tie everything together by tagging on "spot" at the end that could be a little problematic, but "power spot" is easily replaceable by something like "Spiritual Rejuvenation" or something like that.

It's important that what you decide on matches up well with what's on-screen. okay I will try to get screencaps up soon but briefly (and I am also just watching the video right now): Art Spot - basically aesthetically pleasing videos of the Art museum, and Art pieces around the city. also includes videos from events related to art & culture. Power Spot - loads of videos from the temple, plus a tagline that says アスリートと力と北の大地が大きなパワーを生み出す with video from the a ski jump stadium. and then loads of nature. Flower spot - all teh different flowers in the seasons night view spot - different places whre you can see the night view winter activity spot - winter sports like skiing snowboarding even curling, tubing, sledding, walking in the snow, simply visiting the snow festival, jozankei spot - onsens + activities you can do at that place

I was also sent Art Spot ~アートに出会い、アートにふれあう~
Power Spot ~心と体にパワーが満ちる~
Winter Activity Spot ~雪国の大都市さっぽろの冬を楽しむ~
Night view Spot ~灯りが織りなすアートな夜景~
Flower Spot ~四季を奏でるさっぽろの色彩~
Jozankei Spot ~温泉+アクティブに楽しむ~
although the subtitles may change

In the meantime, just start writing things down for each. I like Artistic Pleasures, so let's leave that one alone for the time being.
Power Spot - I still think (x) Rejuvenation is good. "Spiritual" might not work if they want to equally emphasize body and mind, but there's got to be something good in there.
Night View spot - (Something) Nightscapes might be a good choice? Now, I know "nightscape" isn't technically a word, but them artistic types still use it when taking photographs, so I'm okay with it. (I am guilty of frequently saying "snowscapes" when talking about Gifu's winter scenery.)
Flower Spot - Perennial Beauty?
Jozankei - I'm going to go ahead and say that there's a clever title to be found here involving "Immersion" in some way (because you literally immerse yourself in a hot spring. laffo)

At the moment I have come up with
Art Zones, Rejuvenating Spaces, Colours of the City, Nightscape Spaces, Winter Activity Zones, Multi-purpose Jozankei(??? how do I get this idea across better?)
trying to tie it all together with the idea of "zones" or "spaces" but it doesnt quite work with some like the flower spot? I like perennial (if it's to be meant seasonal). Maybe perennial colours of the city.. Also, is artistic pleasures not too cheesy? Or should I just make it cheesy?

i don't think "zones" works well. if they're all "zones" you're gonna make your city sounds like the crystal maze or something
Artistic Pleasures Rejuvenation Stations (only half joking) Colours of the City Dazzling Nightscapes Winter Wonderland Soaking up the Jozankei Area
there's no real unifying theme though
why don't you also try come up with a theme "buzzword" for example COOL JAPAN and then have the themes each beginning with a letter
so if we take the first letter of each of my suggestions above, we would have ARCDWS. with a little tweaking we could have DWARFS, and then that buzzword could be your unifying theme

Artistic Pleasures is just the right amount of cheese.
(Adjective) Nightscapes is definitely the way to go for that one, I think. It sounds like it's trying to imply a softer kind of scenery, so this may call for a word that suggests a more low-key beauty.
I honestly feel like an over-arching theme may not even be necessary for this, since it's just a single video. I would focus more on making each one memorable, and if you can figure out a clever way to tie them together, bonus!

I totally agree with this. also + Dazzling Nightscapes, and I think I need to think of a softer word then. gonna type random adjectives into thesaurus.com brainstorm some more. This is really helping, thanks guys.

if it's something you plan to put down on paper or on the web later though then yes
a theme would help
Also, I mean, Dazzling is good (we were just brainstorming anyway), but ~灯りが織りなすアートな夜景~ ("artistic nightscapes woven together by (soft) lights" makes me think it might be going for something more subtle? The kanji they used was 灯り and not 明かり, after all. I feel like they're talking about a softer kind of light - like from a lamp or a torch.

Examples of the nightscapes! Yeah I agree with the softer image. Oh how about Classy Nightscapes.

The video... explains what Jozankei is, right? I like G-Rex's "Soak up the Jozankei Area" suggestion, because it immediately explains that it's the name of a place.

yeah i didn't understand that Jozankei was an area at first so i think that's important to make clear
as for the NIPPONGO of the nightscapes, yeah i didn't read that
idk about "comforting nightscapes" though. if we're thinking something softer then how about "candescent" or is that too difficult? like, is this aimed at ZA GAIKOKU? or native english speakers in particular?

yeh i was just throwing words out there
comforting would definitely be the worst of the bunch
anything that makes ya feel all fuzzy would be good
"Glowing Nightscapes" "Welcoming Nightscapes" "Soothing Nightscapes"
edit:
"Enchanting Nightscapes"
"Pocahontas"

is this aimed at ZA GAIKOKU? or native english speakers in particular? after agonizing for a while I finally thought to ask this question (should have asked from the beginning, I am such an idiot) so apparently, they are doing it two ways. 1. A Japanese audience - so stuff like Power Spot will stay because Japanese understand that (see attached pic). The subtitle will be in Japanese. 2. HENCE, I suggested that I then be in charge of the English version. So I will translate the subtitles as well. So now I have freedom to create my own subtitles too, based on the video! 3. I am wondering if it's worth it to get into an argument for the English wording in the Japanese version. E.G. "Art Spot". I am saying it should be "Art Spots" because we're talking more than one place here, but they're saying, Japanese feel weird seeing something with an "s" - 一方で I feel weird seeing something in romaji without the "s". For the Japanese people, stuff like "night view spot" will also change into something like "night view scene" (how else would you say 夜景スポット in English?!) RE: Jozankei I love the Soak Up idea. And my colleague suddenly said, he actually doesn't really want the word Jozankei in it anymore because it disrupts the energy of the entire thing? Because the other ones are all generic titles, and to have one suddenly with Jozankei or a specific place name in it is too... odd he says. Ideas? I'm thinking of things like, "Suburb fun" or something (reference: Jozankei is the onsen town in Sapporo)

That's all cool. Be sure to ask questions and get involved as deep as you can as early as possible from now on. Being in charge of the subtitles that will be displayed alongside the punchy titles for each one makes naming them easier, as you can offer context using the subtitles, which should make your job a lot of easier.
RE: "Japanese feel weird seeing something an 's'":
too bad
tell 'em to change it, cuz it's weird as hell
Also, your coworker is smart for wanting to remove Jozankei entirely. Make it fun - just be sure that you mention how it's an opportunity for GAIKOKJIN to experience real Japanese ONSEN
If they're asking for your opinions on 夜景スポット, just tell them to make it, like, "Nighttime Views" or something. There are plenty of options.
edit: "Nighttime Scenery" or something like that

I thought of outskirts as well. ANYHOW.
What do you think of "ARTSCAPE" btw? it's the general theme of this video(s) The previous one was Cinematic City Sapporo. This year it's Artscape Sapporo

okay so let me understand this
> make japanese version of video > put it in english > put it in incorrect english so it's easier to understand
??
why not put it in...for example, i'm just throwing this out here, but
why not put it in japanese?

I don't have to cut up my brain into pieces so small, and give them to those who don't think. I don't have to search for true logic in the depths of Japanese GYOUSEI, cos it's gonna find me here~♪
