些細なことですみません。
Child-rearing has always left me fairly unsatisfied as a translation for 子育て - in that while it is correct, it seems inelegant.
What do you guys use, and is there a reason we can't use "Parenting"?

The reason I don't (/am not allowed to) use "parenting" in a lot of the translations I do is because 子育て often encompasses things like daycare centers (and the people there helping with 子育て), schools, things like that -- "takes a village to raise a child" type of phrases. That, and the person who is raising the child is not necessarily a parent (guardian, grandparent, other relative, state-run facility). In these cases, I usually go with "child-raising."
I do use "parents" and "parenting" when I can though. Example: ママ・パパ支援店 (basically a business that gives parent discounts) = Parent Support Shops or something like that. I don't remember clearly, but I definitely changed it from "Mama and Papa Support (something)" to "Parent."

I never thought about how child-rearing was not a very satisfactory word though. Because even though I know the word "rearing" seems to be for animals, I never saw a problem with it because it is widely used even in English media. Child-raising on the other hand, I hardly see.

Weeeeeeeird
If I saw child raising I would think it was wrong. I know in Ireland Child rearing would be viewed as more correct. However, young people dont use child rearing because it sounds a bit backward and Irish people are very conscious of being viewed as backward because........we are often viewed as backward so in conversation we would talk about raising children but never child raising.
Maybe its an American English British English thing?

yeah what irish said probably! I mean, I see child rearing more because of the exposure to British related texts and stuff perhaps? But I could be wrong. Child raising just doesn't sit with me either ):

Yeah, for me child-rearing sounds more natural, although it does have a more formal feel than child raising. I'd never say 'rearing a child', though, always 'raising a child'. So. /my2yen
