Hello all! My name is Louise Takata and I'm a former ALT/CIR/Kobe PR Specialist. I'm going to be giving the "sempai kara no advice" talk at CIR Tokyo Orientation for both groups A and B. New CIRs- what do you want to know? What are you worried about? Current/former CIRs- what do you wish someone told you at your Tokyo Orientation? Obviously I can't promise to know the answers, but I can at least try and give it a shot. (I hope you guys will be kind and pretend you didn't already read the answers in this thread )

I'm a current/leaving CIR. I think it would be helpful to walk the newbies through their first few days on the job and go over things they should make sure to do before the work stars pouring in (for example, studying the seating chart (or asking for one if one isn't already provided)).

Giving them some encouragement might be nice?
Letting them know that it's okay not to know everything in the beginning and part of the experience is asking questions, learning and making mistakes.
There's a lot of pressure in those sessions from the get go to have perfect Japanese and be perfect professionals but a lot of the newbies are recent graduates with little to no experience, some are in Japan for the first time, so it might be nice to lighten the atmosphere and relax them a little. They're about to get overwhelmed for the next few days, weeks, months, (years??).
Other than that, I'm sure they'll have lot's of questions for you!
Good luck for the talks. I hope they go well!

Hi! I'm a new CIR in group B. I'd appreciate if you could talk about the first day/week of the job and how to get acclimated quickly (e.g. writing down everyone's names or something). Also, advice on how to ask for help if you're having problems with work or what to do if you've made a mistake would be wonderful. Thanks!!

Hello! I am also a new CIR in group B. I am most worried about jumping into Japanese working culture coming from little work experience, and as a non-native. I would love to hear any advice about how you navigated through Japanese work culture. Do you have any notable anecdotes about dealing with conflict in the work place? I can't wait to hear your talk

Hello! I’m actually an incoming Kobe ALT but I have aspirations of becoming a CIR for Kobe City eventually. I’d love to get some advice from you, but I don’t think I’ll have the opportunity to speak with you directly at orientation, seeing as the ALTs are often separated from the CIRs. Would you mind if I added you on Facebook or tried contacting you some other way? Thank you in advance.

Just here to say that your presentation was my favorite at Tokyo Orientation. Thanks for the advice!
