So, my city wants to set a specific translation for "係員" and "主任". They suggested making them "staff" and "senior staff".
Now, to me I'm used to staff meaning everybody who works for an organization, and senior staff being the members of the staff that have higher positions. It seems a little strange to me to give "staff" as a specific job title for one position.
What do you guys think? Am I thinking to hard about it?

I've seen a lot of people use it but it has always seemed a little strange to me...
That said, our English for 主任 is 'Eternal Overlordistrative Officer' so really I don't think it's much better. -.-' (Can't think of anything better so I've just let it stay that way.)

We use "Senior Staff Member" for 主任 and "Staff Member" for 主事 (our equivalent of your 係員, I think). I also usually interpret "staff" as plural.

sounds dumb but when you think about it not one single person in this world gives a crap so i'm alright with also not caring

Ours is super general.
"Assistant Director" for EVERYONE below 課長
"Director" for 総括専門員、主幹、課長、and 室長
"Executive Director" for 監
"Director-General" for everyone above up to 部長 level

So there does seem to be consensus that it's dumb, but also that there isn't really a great alternative.
Also G-rex has a very good point. Even if they went to an ass charity no one would give them an ass about this.
Hm. I'll give it another day, but I have a feeling I'll just go with it. Thanks for the responses.

We also use Staff Member ( thousand leaves 参考) and there's a note that it doesn't necessarily correspond to the 相手国's system.

I especially love the Assistant Director status for everyone. You sound super important until someone finds out there are 2000 other people with your exact job title.

A line from Flanders and Swann (if anyone knows them) springs to mind: "And me, chief assistant to the assistant chief..." We now have 副主査 to join our 主査 and 係長 in our sections... they get to be assistant advisors, advisors and section chiefs.

Yup, the BUTYOU is in his own room way off to the side of the whole section, but the KAN is right here with us in our division.
In his own room granted, but yeah

So that means even in Japan the rankings aren't quite unified? We don't exactly have a KAN here in Sapporo but I always had the idea that it was like a Director position... but I could be wrong? KAN is supervisor then, eh?

Yeah, it kinda feels like we answer to hosa, who answers to kacho, who answers to kan, who answers to bucho over here we answer to kakaricho who answers to kacho who answers to bucho who answers to kyokucho (after that its the mayor already so). SO WEIRD. If the two buchos meet, they're like YO BUDDY but in actual fact, one is higher ranked than the other!!! CANNOT TAKE.
