Do any of your placements have multilingual pointing charts around town to help with communication? I'm thinking of introducing a chart like that to businesses in my city and how to use it, so they can feel more at ease when communicating with people who can't speak Japanese.
The thing is, it sonds like a good idea but I haven't actually used a chart like that to communicate before so I'm not sure what the difficulties would be.
Like, should Japanese people read the phrases in Japanese while pointing at the translation on the chart? Or do people just grunt and point at the translation/image? I'm sure there are times where hand gestures and small vocabulary might get the message across quicker as well. Looking at several examples it also seems that the text heavy-no image ones would take a bit more time to get used to or maybe involve too much reading. So anyways it seems like a handy tool to have but I don't want to accidentally confuse people here when I introduce it, or cause confusion when we try to practice it.
Any tips?
