Second thread: the actual Olympics/Paralympics.
What is there to say about this, if you live here you’ve heard about nothing else for the past 3814390483042 years and you're either already hype or ready to kill the Olympic movement forever. If you are one of the hype, and you would like to IKASU the fruits of your CIR years while living in a sports anime, please read on.
Honestly I'm partly plugging this because CIRs are massively underrepresented here compared to the potential they have to contribute just by speaking decent business Japanese and understanding both Japanese government culture and... not that. Needless to say, this is a pretty amazing thing to put on your resume, and if you’re interested specifically in certain fields like communications, translation, marketing, international business/NGO work, sports... things..., etc it’s a great career opportunity. But mostly, working for the Olympics/Paralympics is just really fucking cool.
There are several openings at the moment to be filled over the next few months. The timing is obviously pretty bad for CIRs who just recontracted, but if you’ve just left the program or you’re willing to break contract (or are an alumni who's already returned home, hello), I think it's worth it tbh.
The full KOHBO page is here; here are some of what I think the more relevant openings are:
- International Relations: Language Services – ideal former CIR position imo
- International Relations: NOC/NPC Relations – NOC/NPC stands for National Olympic Committees/National Paralympic Committees and this is another position very well suited to a former CIR. Don't be confused by the weird contradictory Japanese language requirement – trust me, you have it.
- Communications Manager – Here's the comms manager listing, but if you have experience in comms/PR/press, message me directly before you apply. Especially if you speak a third language, especially-especially if that language is Spanish or Chinese.
Other opportunities that might be interesting if you have some (not necessarily a ton of) relevant experience: Digital Media Manager (French/Chinese/Korean), Digital Media (Website Management), and Marketing, plus the Games Operations department listings are also worth checking out if you’re interested in the nuts and bolts of how the whole thing gets off the ground.
If you have questions about the workplace, culture, recruitment timeline, etc, I’ll answer them as best as I can either on thread or over PM. Some parts of the organizational culture will be v e r y familiar to CIRs, not in the best way, and some will seem like a dream in comparison. The salary is frankly nothing special. However they offer solid relocation packages for overseas hires, and I understand there's some sort of package for domestic relocation as well although I’m not personally familiar with the terms.
Last but not least: no inside track on tickets. Sorry.
ETA: I'm v KIMCHO about posting this since it is extremely traceable to me but I'm doing it anyway for the sake of my former comrades in job seeking. if there is a way to make this members-only tho... please tell me.
