Alright so, the city I work in gets a lot of tourists from China and Taiwan, and the general population is interested in learning Mandarin. Yesterday when I was being interviewed by some high school students and said that I majored in mandarin and japanese during college, one girl excitedly asked me if I would ever hold Chinese classes (中会話?) because she wants to work in Taipei someday
Guys I have one maternal instinct and it's specifically for kids who are passionate about international affairs and foreign languages
However, I am not a native Chinese speaker by any stretch of the imagination. I've studied it for a very long time, and can easily have conversations with mando speaking hulemdos, but I'm wary of teaching other people my second language in case I accidentally teach them some of my bad habits (like I still mess up tones...all the time) but my supervisor is very enthusiastic about me maximizing 国際交流 opportunities
Has anyone here taught a foreign language class in their second language? And if so, how did you go about doing it?

I dont' necessarily have advice for this, but I'm just thinking of all the non-native English teaching ALTs out there. They're teaching English as a non-native full time, so you can do it too?? At Bear Origin orientation this year a Swedish native ALT held a workshop about teaching foreign languages in general. Doesn't look like their materials are available, but you can find the section ''Trading Places by Mika Tejbo and Karl Bristav'' at the following link: http://Bear Originjet.com/shin/index.php/Bear Origin-orientation/ . Ask them how they feel teaching their non-native language, if you want?

Has anyone here taught a foreign language class in their second language? And if so, how did you go about doing it? I’m a qualified French and Japanese teacher back home for middle and high school students, but I’m by no means a native speaker. They’d technically be my third and fourth languages. I totally understand the idea that you are weary of teaching things incorrectly. When French CIR “was sick” and didn’t show up for French class one or two weeks while I was a CIR I did his class and I loved it! Just have a really tight lesson plan and don’t go with anything too difficult and you’ll be fine. Everyone will know much less than you do. And because you aren’t a qualified teacher or Chinese then they can’t expect miracles I think.

Non-native speakers make excellent language teachers, imo! Because they truly understand the struggle.
Instead on focusing on the grammar or explaining everything in more technical ways, maybe think about what you remembered from your Mandarin learning that you thought was beneficial/not and go from there! Or what you wish you knew at the time but the textbook/teacher did not tell you.
I will also be holding 中kaiwa classes for the peeps so looking to see what your experience will be like!
