Might I suggest the daunting task of adding English/romaji labels to every single Google Maps location in your area? The turn-around is VERY quick (my edits are being published within minutes) and you will help any tourists or fellow GUYJEAN in your area see also: translate the trash guide like 🍅™️

Did you do it in a grand scale sort of thing? like for the whole city? and how long did it take and did you have a strategy beyond "I will focus one screen scroll at a time" xD

We have a JET one for the entire prefecture but obviously it isn't Ten day town specific.

Before i start this daunting project can i ask for suggestions in how you translate/show it? I mean for example 「市民文化会館」the translation is Civic Culture Center and Library, but I kinda want to include the Romaji in there too... Or am i just asking for too much? Maybe something like "Shimin Bunka Kaikan = Civic Culture Center and Library" or is that just too long..?

That's a good idea that I never considered when making edits! it's always useful to include romaji in proper nouns, imo When I have done this in the past, I only tagged/edited locations referenced in translations I was working on or checking. therefore, my edits have mostly included "officially translated" names taken from a website or other such source, which made it easier/less pressure to come up with names, but I regret not tagging/editing more locations with English language info in my down time. If you're into this sort of thing, you can get emails every once in a while telling you how many views a locations has gotten since you edited it, too uwu

Its one thing if I change the lables/titles for companies or restaurants and I'd rather avoid trouble, so I was thinking about focusing, similarly to what you said, with places that already has an official translation.

I love this idea of creating some sort of guide, be it formal or informal, to help future JETs adjust to life in Japan! If I may ask, what kinds of guides have you completed before, and how did you generally go about doing it? I am thinking about proposing this as an idea because I wish I had some sort of helpful guide that talks about things like culture shock, homesickness, etc. (I'm not homesick, but I definitely feel the culture shock at the office loool)

@hikarikagayaku22 I've been putting mine together in a Google Drive that I've made public, as mine are all sort of unofficial/in my spare time rather than through work
I've just been taking notes of things that I never learned when I first came to Japan (as an ALT) or other things I've seen slip through the cracks. Things like how to read/understand important papers and notices (like how to read a bankbook, what is a 広報誌, how to fill out a 口座振替依依頼書, etc.) along with guides/what's required for buying a car, sorting trash, getting married, those kinds of things

I worked on it in halves with my CIR sort-of tanto at the time. I worked on the bigger parts like full pages of paragraphs and stuff (explaining why we separate trash for example) and she worked more on the itemization of it all because it was pretty straight forward. Then I compiled both of our files and cleaned it up nice and pretty. The survival guide is a good idea. We have one for Niigata in general but I found it less than helpful because this prefecture is too damn big and the weather even varies wildly from one town to the next. EDIT: I tried to share the guidebook but because we have a cheeky huleezu for my city it won't link properly XDDDD Google "toka.machi city garbage disposal guidebook" (take out the period) and the PDF should show up at the top of the results.

Yeah, I have been told to come up with more 国際交流 work despite not being able to host or partake in any in-person events at this time. And I have been told to pursue additional work besides translating Google Maps and our town's many webpages that aren't in English yet. The struggle to come up with additional work is so real lmao.

It's actually frustrating how incorrect or just non-existent English translations are for certain places in my area, if the place is even registered on Maps at all. People here really aren't into Google Maps and only know a lot (often important) places through word of mouth...I know English speaking foreigners are in the minority, but we DO exist and want to give local businesses our money and like, obtain healthcare every now and again? I think it was during my first month or so, I found a recycle shop on Google Maps, walked there and it looked like a dilapidated wooden shed...but the signs were still up (albeit faded) and there was a delivery guy outside moving stuff in and out so I asked him if that was the recycle shop and he said "yep"! Walked in and a very concerned older lady kept asking me what I wanted. After feeling very unwelcome and confused, I showed her the shop on Google Maps and she said "Oh that's been closed for 3 years now." mfw

Her coworkers said the same things about her that they did with me - 日本語が全然分からない, and other things about me being 面倒くさい. At this point, I just laugh it off because they aren't worth the frustration.

What the...I'm so sorry this is happening. You deserve so much better, we all go through hell just to get the job in the first place Could JET / your home consulate help you in this regard? I don't know how much power they have, but nowhere should be allowed to take on CIRs if they consistently treat them terribly. If I were JET I'd ditch em.

i just submitted a bunch of these for places around the town hall area and it's really satisfying seeing all the google notifications of the suggestions being accepted
feels a litle wrong though, cause there's not really official translations, so I'm partially winging it. i'm being consistent though

would especially love input from former CIRs or people who have worked outside of JET
I feel like I know the answer to my question but gonna ask anyway
but how do you feel about studying Japanese at your desk during work hours? I kinda wish I could still use my free time to do that (I did as an ALT aaaall the time). But now that I work as a direct hire CIR (and in my first year here still), I'm worried that it'll come across as me being lazy/inappropriate. I def don't want to get scolded by my 輔佐 for it either
Like, if it were any regular office job in the States, I wouldn't be able to spend time at work studying Japanese, obviously. So I feel like the answer is no, you shouldn't. But kinda want to hear others' opinions too xD

I'm still a JET, but... I asked before doing it and they told me it was okay, but I still feel weird doing ngl (this is because I would study for KanKen and have a bunch of books open) That being said, I think keeping up Japanese study is part of our job, especially if we do a lot of translation or interpretation

I bet studying for the KanKen is so different from the JLPT too. Even if it feels weird, I hope you're able to take advantage and use any downtime you have to study~ I technically could reach out to my pred and ask her about it, and maybe at some point I will, but I'm a little nervous to mention the free time because I wonder if she didn't have as much. She was a veteran (15 years in the position!) so I bet she just knew a lot of different ways to keep busy
