Hello fellow future CIRs. Let's chat. What's on your mind?
I've been considering what I want to pack and it turns out I'm not overly attached to anything, so I'll probably be turning up at Keio Plaza with just a toothbrush in my pocket.
Meanwhile I'll be spending my remaining time studying. I'll admit to a few nerves about my Japanese level.

yeah, i would rather suggest spending as much time appreciating your home country and hulemdos and family as possible, because you will learn infinitely more japanese (and applicable/relevant japanese) at work than you will trying to brush up on it
besides, everyone here seems to be positively thrilled at the fact that we can read hiragana, so most CIRs only feel the pressure that they put on themselves.
my advice would be to enjoy yourself and make mental preparations for coming (and dareisay staying). everything falls into place eventually anyway.

Also the coming-with-minimal-things idea is good - you are almost certainly going to amass a lot more stuff once you get here and most likely you will have to eventually try to take things back home again, too.

Ditto. Pretty much everything cept clothes and some real special items should be left at home. Even clothes to an extent; bring enough obviously, and certainly businesswear, but there's no need to go way overboard with all of your winter stuff and extra things like that. Unless you're real big, you can pick it all up here after you get settled and figure out what you actually should be dressing like.

Only bring stuff that you won't be able to find easily in Japan and that you can't live without.
That means deodorant for the guys, nutella, toothpaste with fluoride, nutella, beef jerky, etc. Maybe some nutella just in case.
And eat as much mexican food, barbecue, meat, and five guys burgers and fries as you can because you either won't find any of that stuff here or you'll be paying an arm and a leg.
I'm hungry...

I don't see why deodorant is only for guys, that's definitely something I brought over and buy when I go back home. Also some toothpaste here has fluoride but the only kind I've found that doesn't have a weird texture is Aquafresh.

I heard many people say that they don't find deodorant in Japan, and I'm starting thinking that what is deodorant for me is not for you, because I find what I would call deodorant in Italy at every supermarket, pharmacy, and konbini. Jitenshaa, don't!!! I really want to lose wait, but if I don't cut on calories I will never ever do!!! T____T

The only "real" deodorant here is Lynx (I guess it's "Axe" everywhere but the UK). I remember once buying some Gatsby deodorant/body spray thing and being super confused after I sprayed it and it felt like not even a single speck of it stuck to my body.

Do Asian people just not sweat or something? There was no deodorant in China either.

there's actually some science behind asians not smelling when they sweat apparently
because of course everyone sweats
something about a gene that makes sweat glands produce something smelly, and also wet/waxy earwax vs dry/flaky earwax
or something
edit: i should also mention that the gene responsible for smelly sweat is way more prevalent in caucasians/africans than in asians so it's not like automatically asian = not smelly and vice versa

Uh...having been on a bus full of yosakoi teammates after dancing all day in the summer, believe me, Asian sweat smells.
I do have dry earwax though, that's a thing I was surprised to find out was not the same.

Don't believe their lies about the suction treatment for ear wax removal though. My left ear drum is perforated so I have to get the wax removed every now and then (it's actually "debris" since that ear no longer produces wax) and it is not "painless, a little noisy and very quick", it's more "sometimes quite bloody painful, the nosiest damn thing you've ever heard and well, sure, it rarely takes more than a few minutes".

Wait have you gotten ear wax removal in Japan? What is it like? Occasionally I get really bad wax build up for some reason. Last time it lasted for like a week and I had trouble hearing out of my left ear. No idea why this happens but I've gone to doctors to get it removed a few times back in the US. And as for deodorant I agree Japanese deodorant is very bad and I always have my parents ship stuff over.

Wait have you gotten ear wax removal in Japan? What is it like? Same as it was in the UK, except in Japanese. I rarely go specifically to get stuff removed though, it's usually something else and they're like "Oh, look, you've got a build up in your left ear. Let's take that out!"

Lmao you guys have such good advice and I definitely did not follow your luggage rule. I bought lots of stuff... I just wanted to wear clothes I already liked.
I still use UK deodorant here because Japanese deodorant doesn't do the job for me and my stinky Caucasian sweat glands.

One suitcase of Right Guard, one suitcase of Colgate. Got it.
I could potentially arrange a deodorant taster session to promote British culture?

Maybe everyone was there as well? It was easily the best part of that Mid-Year Chaos, I think it was the last period too so everyone just ended on a really confusing, what just happened kind of note.
