Ok, so just steering the topic back from driving to placements... just in case any new CIRs this year wants to know because I know it can be torturous waiting for contact from your CO and preds. I am working in the prefecture office and we have received the new JETs information last week. Apparently, the COs are only allowed to contact the new JETs from 24 May 2018 onwards, so you will have to wait a little more or join the AJET facebook pages! Oh and if there is a better place to share this piece of information, anyone please feel free to do so. (Man... i somehow ended up on a new page -.-)

It's nice to finally have a better idea of when we'll hear about placements... thank you Ms.1040!
By the way, what are the AJET pages?

There are a bunch of them, things like incoming Jets 2018, Jet ladies, i think there's a CIR one that's almost totally inactive, and eventually you'll be able to join your prefectural jet group once you know where you'll be!

AJETs are local associations of JETs who organize social activities (etc.) for JETs in their areas. Those groups (and their FB pages) are a good way of finding out about local things (ask specific questions about where you'll be places) and events.

There are also AJET Special Interest Groups (SIGs) FB pages, and other JET-related groups that you can check out! I was actually hella confused about AJET and JETAA and everything when I first came on so here's a guide: - AJET = Association for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (mainly serves incoming and current JETs)
- National AJET is the big one, they will be at the Tokyo Orientation. Mainly in charge of communicating between JETs and gyomu Gyomu+3MINISTRIES, getting various sponsorship opportunities for JETs, as well as providing counselling/support for JETs. As far as I know, anyone can run for a position in the National AJET cabinet... an election is held every year.
- Some prefectures have their own AJET, so e.g. Okinawa has OkiAJET.
[li]JETAA = Japan and Exchange Teaching Program Alumni Association[/li] - These are the ones that have chapters overseas, in your home country, and probably the ones whom you come into contact with during your Pre-Departure Orientation.
[li]Blocks[/li] - JET divides the 47 prefectures into 11 blocks. So far they have had zilch impact on my life on JET.
- OkiAJET further divides Okinawa itself into 8 blocks. So far they have also had zilch impact on my life, but I write this here on the off-chance that one of you is sent to Okinawa this year, and gets confused by the repeated terminology.
[/ul] - PA = Prefectural Advisor. They're current JETs help you when you're in trouble. Just thought I'd include this while I'm writing a guide to all the random terminology that you'll be bombarded with.

Just like to add on, 24 May 2018 is the start date for COs to contact the new JETs. It is highly possible that you will hear about your placements from your respective consulates before this date. However, COs will have to receive the new JETs' reply forms first before they can send out any notice or letter of acceptance to the new JETs directly. So it is possible that you may only receive formal notification from your COs later than 24 May, depending on how fast the COs receive the reply forms.

I was surprised to find out recently that not every prefecture has an AJET! Nagasaki is apparently one of those that don't. The local chapters of AJET are essentially groups of volunteers who organise social events for the JETs in their prefecture, so I guess if a prefecture doesn't have enough people interested in doing that, that's why they don't have a local AJET.
Also, I believe it's not AJET that organises the prefectural orientation, but rather the prefectural office itself. PAs consist of both current JETs as well as Japanese prefectural office employees (who are the supervisors of the JET PAs), and they are the ones who are put in charge of organising the prefectural orientation.
(Also ❄icepath❄, I think you meant "a few months" and not "years"? )

[/quote] Some of this may be ESID, though; for example, in that place with the Lake and NOTHING ELSE, the PAs organize all orientations. The AJET hierarchy here is: National AJET - Block 6 (along with Hyogo and Kyoto) - that place with the Lake and NOTHING ELSE AJET (not all prefectural AJETs have FB pages) - and then we have local chapters which aren't AJET per se, but who do about the same things. It's a thing for Kansai JETs to be part of several of the block groups, since it's so easy to go from one prefecture to the other. I haven't been here a year yet, but the biggest incidence AJET has had on my life is social. They also send out a variety of surveys to improve the program, which apparently works pretty well. Note on PAs: if like me you are the only prefectural CIR, you may become the default PA. It is an... interesting experience.

❄icepath❄ Haha it's ok, I only know some of these things from asking other people or reading stuff online too, so it's not as if I'm that much more knowledgeable.
The blocks thing is really confusing though, it took me awhile to get used to it when I first came. I don't know why they can't use another word for the prefectural blocks instead, like maybe "sub-block" or something.
Aya Raincoat hue I see you're having the same problems with the forum quote tags as I am.

Aya Raincoat hue I see you're having the same problems with the forum quote tags as I am. hue, not even... I just deleted the inner quote and didn't notice I had deleted the opening code... but when I did I didn't care enough to fix it. ^^;;; Sub-block would be even more confusing, since it's not a sub-unit of the national blocks...

Yeah I know it probably isn't a good word to use (it's abit clunky too), I just made it up on the fly while I was typing that post since I couldn't think of anything else, haha! But I'm sure someone out there would be able to think of a better and less confusing word. I just think it can be pretty confusing when people refer to their blocks without indicating whether they're talking about the national blocks or the prefectural blocks and it takes abit of effort to figure out what they're referring to.

Thanks you guys! Hope you all find out soon, the waiting is so nerve-wracking! I look forward to seeing where everyone is placed! I am from NJ and used to live in Hawaii and I knew Fukui has some connections with both so I was suspicious I would be placed there actually ^^; My email just said Fukui-ken so I'm guessing I'll be in the kencho? I'll have to wait to hear from my pred/CO to see where I'll be I guess. I didn't put Fukui on my requests but I wanted to be in the Hokuriku region/Northern Japan so I'm pretty happy, though I have some slight mixed feelings. I've never been, but another hulemdo of mine from school is a CIR there now in a small city so I'm gonna have to ask her all about it. Also, congrats disco! Okayama looks beautiful!

I'm one of the prefectural CIRs in Fukui, although I can't say whether you're my successor or not until next week, sorry. You'll definitely be prefectural though if you weren't told a specific city!
Fukui is a pretty great place to live, so I wouldn't worry too much! Although I'd definitely get a car if I were you because the public transport isn't the best as a result of basically everyone driving lmao

Wow! I have so much to ask you I don't know where to start haha I spoke with my hulemdo in Fukui this afternoon, and the more we talked and the more I look up, I think it will be a really good fit for me! The main thing I'm a little unsure about actually is the transportation since I can't drive, but it's about time I stopped putting it off I guess. I'm really excited to be working in a literal castle kencho hue my boss showed me a picture of it and my eyes went wide Feel free to message me, but if you don't feel comfortable messaging before the 24th if you are my predecessor that's ok too!
