Anyone else get their Kurodahan email? I definitely didn't win but placed 15 out of 49 so that's nice I guess?

I honestly believe both of you have much better translation/ general nippomgo skills, I just had a massive time advantage which allowed me to edit and pore over each word...

there's always next year, but my powers will have doubled by then
random aside: teaching the "will have ~ed" construction in English is really hard. I ended up drawing pictures and marching around to explain my point
maybe i will post a picture in the eikaiwa thread for SAMKOU

I think you have far better English composition and creative writing, and that is if anything, more important in translating fiction! But it is such a fundamental difference (like, I'm pretty confidence shaking-ly low) that I wonder whether they marked me down for British English, or I made some really basic stupid mistake....like thE NAME?? Anyway I will try not to think about it and set myself on the helter skelter of self loathing hue

They could always just get your permission to "correct" the British English if you won, so maybe it was more stylistic? Idk how one assigns points to something as abstract as a "good" literary translation honestly
And I really, really want to see the finalists

Oh, hey, Manga Translation Battle results are out. Didn't place (unsurprisingly), but it means I have the chance to read over the finalists' submissions now!

Speaking of which, all the names people came up with for the Grandpa character in the Kurodahan contest are hilarious.
My favorite is Poppa

(more than a month late lmao) I can't wait to read the ones for the manga I half-translated to see how they handed all the onomatopoeia.

less a contest and more just a test but i figured i would drop this here before we lose it I wonder how I get the job of translating ~films~ into English for the subtitles for DVDs. Someone has that job. Why can't it be....WATASI? tests.hermes.nflx.io/Have at it, hulemdos.

less a contest and more just a test but i figured i would drop this here before we lose it I took that test (and passed) before cause I used to translate subs while waiting for my jet interview results. Not worth it~ Not that I’m encouraging people to profit while on jet but Netflix rate for nihongo is $27 per video minute but some of it will go to the vendors, proofreaders and some other peeps and then lastly the subtitler. So you’re lucky to get $3-5. Most vendors just charge $1-2. I just wanted to rant how subtitlers get paid so low.

maybe that is why quality is so crap. you want quality, you have to pay for it

Mumblesnore do it! subtitling is fun~ Honestly, subtitling and video games translation were my fave class in uni and I wanted to be a subtitler after jet if the pay wasn't しte. Miscreative I agree hyakupasento When Netflix announced that they were doing this whole hermes test there were some news sites/blogs who wrote about it. But a lot of them wrote their articles in a way that made people think "oh hey I know ââ language I can definitely do this" so they didn't expect the influx of people (mostly those without translation experience and thought that Netflix will pay them $$$) who took the test. The passing grade is different for each language pair but they never really told people what the minimum passing grade was...

It kind of sucks that the more fun types of translation are also the worst paid...

I'm gonna give it another go this year and try not to fail miserably hue especially if it's looking like I might have to try and hustle for freelance in the near future, as I plan to move back to the UK with no job lined up
Hopefully the writing thread and forum dnd has polished my prose a little...and I guess I'll write in American English to be on the safe side hue
