Hi! I got placed in Maebashi, Gun Mother-ken! I've only ever heard the name, so I don't know anything about it, but I'm very excited to start this next chapter in my life. Of course I'm doing my own research about the area but if anyone knows anything about Maebashi or just Gun Mother-Ken in general, I'd love to hear about it! Hello, I was not in Gun Mother (I was/am in a prefecture next door), but the Gun Mother JET community seems pretty great! I'm f.riends with two ALT/CIR/PAs who I think were in Maebashi and Takasaki (iirc Maebashi and Takasaki are right next to each other, I think their major stations are only 15 minutes apart on a local line) and are still active there, and they were/are both delightful and loved their time as Gun Mother JETs. They were really involved with JOMO JET in their day. Maebashi has good access to Saitama and Tokyo should you feel the need to go out and explore on a day trip! If you like history (esp about industry), the Tomioka Silk Mill is probably about 60-90 minutes away. Minakami (rafting/water stuff, also skiing?) and Kusatsu (onsen) are also popular tourist spots in the prefecture! Anyway, congrats on your placement and welcome to the CIRHP!! Thank you so much!!!

I finally feel qualified to post since placements are out... Hello! I'm an incoming CIR who's ended up in Aomori-ken, which was almost-not-but-also surprising to me! I was a little disappointed at first I was so far from Big cities but it's also technically what I requested (Block 1 since I studied abroad in Hokkaido before haha), so I'm still super excited! And apparently I have... senpais!? Which is a big relief to be honest. Looking forward to lurking more in the coming weeks. 👀 Welcome to Aomori!! I saw your username first and was hoping it was related! While aomori city isn't exactly a BIG city, it still has lots to do, just fairly spread out instead of all central. and it's only a (cheap) overnight bus ride or a (expensive) shink ride to Tokyo You definitely have senpais! I will be/ am with the shi (BoE) not the ken, but i thiiink we will work together for cruise ships (tourist info desk/ interpreting walking tours) and maybe some other random things occasionally, 4649 OH my username was absolutely a coincidence since I made an account way before I got my placement (and on the spot too), but that's hilarious to me now, haha. I'm not actually in Aomori-shi, it's kind of an intimidating two and a half hours away (in the wise directions of グーグル先生) so I was also a little disappointed on that point 💦, but it's far from a deal breaker. I'd love to meet any and all Aomori-ken people though, so 4649 right back at you :>

I wouldn’t worry too much, especially if you’re concerned you won’t be able to do as much interesting work. It really depends on the specific placement. A fellow Nagano CIR is based in a tiny MURA, and her work has been basically all interpreting and business trips – she spent the whole of last winter in Vietnam working on CIR stuff from there. Also, your town has roughly the same population as my city does so even a city placement isn’t a guarantee that you won’t be rural You may even be less rural than I am! Thanks for your message. It looks like I will have to drive, which is troublesome because I do not have the ability to drive a car in my home country, let alone Japan. Do you have transportation in your area? And if not, do you know at all if JET will subsidize a car? so JET (or more accurately C.LAIR) does not deal with stuff like this. they set the recommended minimums for contracts/support that your office/CO provide and have their support systems for community and the JLPT grants but stuff like subsidies come down to your CO. on the plus side, if you live somewhere that you /need/ to have a car, chances are your rent will be cheaper? you have probably heard ESID so much already but there are so many cases of this and none that C.LAIR has any say in. example. say your job requires you to drive. some offices will be nice and let you take your tests during work hours and some wont, despite it being "required" of your position thaaaat said. if you cannot drive, they should not have placed you where it is anywhere close to being required for your life there... you might want to talk to your new supervisor about that relatively soon?

Hmmm I’m not sure if they’d subsidize a car (my placement doesn’t require one so I paid for my own), although even if they don’t you’ll likely have subsidized housing (+ inaka living is cheap) so it probably wouldn’t be too much of a financial burden. Transport around my city isn’t the best, but I’m walking distance to work and the supermarket etc, so hopefully your placement will be pretty central too. If they’ve plonked you in a town where you need a car for work, they usually have an obligation to drive you around. They’re not gonna strand you without transportation. EDIT: beaten ><

Just got placed in Osaka-shi from Vancouver! Pretty excited about the imminent transformation of my spoken Japanese! Why hello there, fellow Vancouverite!!! There aren't very many of us...how many CIRs are leaving from Vancouver this year? I'm an ex-JET, one of the three 2014-departure CIRs Congrats on your wonderful placement! Super tokai, and I'm pretty sure you will start speaking in kansai-弁 pretty soon after arrival - my DOUKI from Vancouver who got placed in Aomori speaks in perfect Tsugaru-弁 now, I love it

Just got placed in Osaka-shi from Vancouver! Pretty excited about the imminent transformation of my spoken Japanese! ahhh i lived in osaka-shi for 2 years and i miss it so much hue osaka is like my japan hometown. there is so much to do and the osakans are generally really warm, hulemdoly people. luckily its more to the north of osaka-fu so the dialect isn't too difficult! i found a lot of osakans either couldn't speak 標準語 or flat-out refused to.. either way you pick up osaka dialect really fast! i hope you have an awesome time!

The best part about speaking kansai-弁 is how my Prof./Supervisor is from Kyoto, and she's always emphasized how much she despises people who group Kyoto-ben with Osaka-ben! Can't wait to speak in Osaka-ben with her

KusunoKou Haha, yeah Kyoto-ben and Osaka-ben are pretty different from each other, it would trigger a Kyoto person if people refer to it as the same "kansai-ben" Kyoto pride! Wow yay good to know there's 4! I heard the # of people applying to be a CIR has been decreasing year by year so I was afraid there wouldn't be as many!

There's lots of JETs in aomori, so even if you're in the middle of nowhere should have at least some ALTs nearby, delicious apples, and lots of beautiful nature and nice people. Hopefully will meet you sometime!

Just got in contact with the other new CIR who will be placed in my area, so that's exciting! A lil buddy who can share my anxiety :")
I've been told my someone local to my placement that leasing a car is probably the best course of action. Has anyone in this thread done it, and what was the process like? How has it compared to buying?

And yes, I have heard of お遍路! Funny story, but I first learned about the SHIKOK pilgrimage when I visited Matsuyama-shi in Mikan Land-ken earlier this year. While we were waiting for placements, I was thinking "if I get placed on SHIKOK somewhere, I'd love to give the pilgrimage a try (well, part of it anyway)". It must be fate that I ended up in Udon Land! Can't wait to start exploring SHIKOK! Maybe I'll see you in High Knowledge one day

I wanted to be placed there because I loved Tohoku when I went. Do you know which city you are placed in? I just got told Aomori Prefecture and no city so I have no idea where I'm going to end up. Seems most people have been told cities so I not sure why I haven't but either way glad to know there are other newbies heading for Aomori!

I know I was not the target of this message, but to answer your question about the why you didn't get a designated city, the email we got about our placements said that if you don't have a city then you're most likely going to be a Prefectural CIR.

So excited to finally know where I'm headed, and I can't be more pleased with my placement! hahah! Message me if you are around the area. Also, do we get to decide our housing options or do our CO make the call on where and what we rent?
Cheers!

Hey everyone! Incoming CIR from the UK here. I got my placement and it is Hamamatsu city in Shizuoka. Really happy about this placement.Never been Shizuoka before.
Anyone going to the meet-up in Birmingham?
Also, it's not against the rules to post my LINE ID on here is it? If it isn't, anyone want to trade LINE IDs?
