Hey guys! So placements have been quickly arriving to people. So it’s a time to rejoice and a time to learn more about your area! I myself am placed in Hyogo-ken, in Toyooka-shi. From what I understand Toyooka is more of an amalgamation of small towns, but I’m excited to learn about the hot springs and storks! Hello to everyone in the Tajima area.

Nice! I'm currently processing my placement a bit, but I do feel really excited at the same time. I wonder if it's okay to reach out to forum people working there or if it's too early...

Got my placement yesterday, I'm in Yamanashi-ken! I had to look up where that is hue but then I realized I actually requested it (part of block 4) so that was really exciting. I think I already found my pred by doing one google search haha, kind of annoyed we have to wait another whole week to get more info

Never has my Japanese felt this rusty..........

I would only be a 3rd gen CIR, and apparently my position is new so I don't have a pred. :v Mildly freaking out hahaha...

Well pred-less hulemdos we can all go through this together <3 dr. pussy popper By the way what do you mean 3rd generation CIR, except no pred? Or does that just refer to the CIRs in the area but not your position?

I finally feel qualified to post since placements are out... Hello! I'm an incoming CIR who's ended up in Aomori-ken, which was almost-not-but-also surprising to me! I was a little disappointed at first I was so far from Big cities but it's also technically what I requested (Block 1 since I studied abroad in Hokkaido before haha), so I'm still super excited! And apparently I have... senpais!? Which is a big relief to be honest.
Looking forward to lurking more in the coming weeks. 👀

Hi! I got placed in Maebashi, Gun Mother-ken! I've only ever heard the name, so I don't know anything about it, but I'm very excited to start this next chapter in my life. Of course I'm doing my own research about the area but if anyone knows anything about Maebashi or just Gun Mother-Ken in general, I'd love to hear about it!

I was placed in Kimotsuki-cho, Kagoshima prefecture. Really surprised I'm in such a rural location because I thought CIRs typically get placed in a -shi? If anyone has information on this area that will be greatly appreciated -- I am pretty shocked and a little disappointed...

I got placed in Taki-cho in Mie Prefecture! I'm excited to be a stone's throw away from Ise, and I found out that someone else from my college got placed as an ALT in the exact same town, which is a cool coincidence (or maybe a deliberate decision?).

If anyone has information on this area that will be greatly appreciated -- I am pretty shocked and a little disappointed... I've been going through similar feelings after finding out my placement (I couldn't fall asleep the first night after finding out, since I couldn't stop adjusting all of my expectations about lifestyle, job duties, and such), but the more I've been researching, the more confident I feel that things will work out. If you want to talk with someone in the same boat, feel free to shoot me a message.
For starters, here's the Kimotsuki town webpage featuring the current CIR, which further links to this Facebook page. There seems to be a cool space center close to your placement! Your predecessor will definitely have a lot more information for you.

If anyone has information on this area that will be greatly appreciated -- I am pretty shocked and a little disappointed... Nope unfortunately that's a huge misconception, haha. CIRs can be placed in really inaka towns or even villages - like some people have been placed in towns with populations of less than 5,000 people or villages with less than 1,000 people. ^_^;;
Also, congrats to all those who have already gotten their placements! Looking forward to seeing you guys post more and join the madness that is the CIRHP forums.

If anyone has information on this area that will be greatly appreciated -- I am pretty shocked and a little disappointed... I wouldn’t worry too much, especially if you’re concerned you won’t be able to do as much interesting work. It really depends on the specific placement. A fellow Nagano CIR is based in a tiny MURA, and her work has been basically all interpreting and business trips – she spent the whole of last winter in Vietnam working on CIR stuff from there. Also, your town has roughly the same population as my city does so even a city placement isn’t a guarantee that you won’t be rural You may even be less rural than I am!

My placement is technically a SHI but it's a conglomeration of several spread-out CHO and doesn't really feel like a city at all. Also because of the tsunami 7 years ago, there's (still) no central area or town hub whatsoever so it REALLY doesn't feel like a city, or even a town really... (not hating, just being honest).
I also had a few sleepless nights when I first got my placement (compounded by the fact that I would be a first-generation CIR with no predecessor) but I eventually came to terms with it and came here with an open mind, and I definitely don't regret coming at all. While I am (happily) leaving after two years and I have decided that I am much more suited to city life over the inaka, I haven't hated my time here either. I've made a lot of good hulemdos (both in my area and online through the CIRHP), and had a very positive work experience. Even though I'm in a very rural placement, I get a TON of translation work and miraculously haven't had to do any school visits (which is something I was dreading having to do when I applied to be a CIR...but still applied anyway lmao).
There have been times when I've been lonely or felt bored, but I think all placements have their problems and if I was placed in a big city I would just have different, but more or less equal, issues.
I say just take this opportunity to go outside your comfort zone and try to come into this with an open mind. A year really isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, and you'll probably be surprised by how much you end up liking (or at least tolerating) your placement. And the CIRHP is always there to keep your spirits up. I know only a small percentage of CIRs actually use these forums, but I think they are especially invaluable for us inaka CIRs to keep us sane and remind us we aren't alone.
Good luck!
edit: ok this was a pretty rambly post hue, but I hope it can be helpful or comforting in some way

Of course I'm doing my own research about the area but if anyone knows anything about Maebashi or just Gun Mother-Ken in general, I'd love to hear about it! Hello, I was not in Gun Mother (I was/am in a prefecture next door), but the Gun Mother JET community seems pretty great! I'm f.riends with two ALT/CIR/PAs who I think were in Maebashi and Takasaki (iirc Maebashi and Takasaki are right next to each other, I think their major stations are only 15 minutes apart on a local line) and are still active there, and they were/are both delightful and loved their time as Gun Mother JETs. They were really involved with JOMO JET in their day. Maebashi has good access to Saitama and Tokyo should you feel the need to go out and explore on a day trip! If you like history (esp about industry), the Tomioka Silk Mill is probably about 60-90 minutes away. Minakami (rafting/water stuff, also skiing?) and Kusatsu (onsen) are also popular tourist spots in the prefecture! Anyway, congrats on your placement and welcome to the CIRHP!!

I saw your username first and was hoping it was related! While aomori city isn't exactly a BIG city, it still has lots to do, just fairly spread out instead of all central. and it's only a (cheap) overnight bus ride or a (expensive) shink ride to Tokyo You definitely have senpais! I will be/ am with the shi (BoE) not the ken, but i thiiink we will work together for cruise ships (tourist info desk/ interpreting walking tours) and maybe some other random things occasionally, 4649

It looks like I will have to drive, which is troublesome because I do not have the ability to drive a car in my home country, let alone Japan. Do you have transportation in your area? And if not, do you know at all if JET will subsidize a car?

I'm the in a little rural town in Hokkaido with a population of 4,000. I am also the first CIR here, and the only CIR within a 2-3 hour drive. I love my little town. I do all kinds of stuff too. Translation/interpretation, event planning, teaching English, and teachinh about American culture. I'm going to southern Honshu later this week for business and even have an international business trip planned later this year. You never know what you'll end up doing until you get there
