All my stuff was decided for me when I got here, and I think I brought around 20 MEN and ended up only using under 10 MEN. I was really lucky though in that my CO prepares EVERYTHING for us JETs. YAPPALI ESID.

YAPPALI ESID. same, got lucky as well. I think my city hall TATEKAE’d everything for me so I barely paid anything until after my first paycheck (and even then I remember having 15man in my jp account after all the move in costs were paid off).

Just got in contact with the other new CIR who will be placed in my area, so that's exciting! A lil buddy who can share my anxiety :") I've been told my someone local to my placement that leasing a car is probably the best course of action. Has anyone in this thread done it, and what was the process like? How has it compared to buying? Also also to follow up with my local knowledge, most of the ALTs and CIRs near Toyooka all go to the same car rental place, called Wataki motors, in Toyooka, because they have a lovely staff member who speaks lovely English. They're good because they take care of any repairs and give you snow tires and a replacement car if any work needs to be done, but it's not cheap. You save the money that you otherwise might have to pay for 車検 if you owned a car, but I started out paying around 4万 a month for a kei-car. Now I switched to a cheaper, older car model and also share it with a neighboring ALT, so I got that payment down to 2万 a month instead.
It's affordable with the JET salary, but it isn't cheap. There are probably cheaper places nearby that don't have any English and the same maintenance services available, but they may be harder to find.
Hi TrickPhoenix! Nice to meet you on here, even though we're just barely missing each other. ^^; And yes! I have also been recommended to go to Wataki Motors (and specifically their leasing company Alternativa) by people since I posed the question. I might end up going to them because everyone who I spoke with that used their service had a very positive experience. No sense in exploring marginally cheaper options when something this reliable exists, imho. Plus the owners are apparently very nice and go out of their way to help clients find local mechanics, etc.

I got my placement info today!~ I'm a British soon-to-be CIR and I'll apparently be based in Beppu City, Oita~ a bit apprehensive 'cause it seems kinda rural and I can't drive [and also didn't really want to learn to drive] but the area itself seems interesting - land of onsen, so I hear? Anyone else based nearby or know more about the area? I've never even been to Kyushu so idk much about the island, let alone my prefecture

That's a great placement, I'm sure you will love it. When I visited last year, bus services was pretty okay along the touristy routes and you can get to Yufuin by bus too. I got the impression that buses in Oita run more frequently compared to Miyazaki so I think you should be fine.

I've heard Beppu is lovely! I had plans to visit a couple years ago, but they were foiled by the Bear Origin earthquake. ;;-;; I ended up visiting other parts of Kyushu -- Nagasaki, Saga, and Fukuoka -- but I'm still sad I missed Oita. Everyone I know who's visited has loved it! popchyk~ is no longer a CIR but may be able to come in with some Oita/Kyushu love here

Ah, that's a shame =/ I didn't really travel around much on my year abroad in Aichi so I never even got as far as Kyushu, but I look forward to exploring somewhere new!~
Ah okay, I did notice their info said Oita when I was reading some other threads so I had been wondering if they were a current CIR or not ^^

Hello 𝑜𝓇𝒾𝒽𝒾𝓂𝑒! I was a cir at the Oita prefectural office in Oita city. Beppu is a lovely city and although Oita Prefecture is rural, both Oita city and Beppu City are bustling and lively (and very close to each other). Beppu is a tourist city and so it's full of people, good places to eat and of course, lots and lots of onsen. I also can't drive and I was ok (Beppu and Oita City are manageable by train and bus, as well as lots other places in the prefecture like Yufuin, Nakatsu etc. I also used to get lifts from hulemdos a lot). There are four cirs based in Oita City (including my successor who is also British and v lovely), which is a very short train ride/car journey away from Beppu. If you want any info about Oita or anything like that please feel free to message me (although I understand if you want it all to be a surprise!). I had a brilliant time and love Oita Prefecture so much (I always bang on about it, as the cirhp knows), so I think you got a great placement good luck with everything!

Ah I see, cool~ oh good, that's nice to know that they're lively despite being rural, and I wasn't sure how close they were just from looking at the map so that's reassuring as well to know that they are close to each other. I'm looking forward to trying the onsen as I haven't been to one before [my best hulemdo on my year abroad had a fairly large tattoo across her back and other smaller ones so she was wary of going to onsen, so I never ended up going either], and good places to eat are important to me so that's great that it has a lot, haha. I wasn't sure about the trains there since I could only see a couple stations actually in Beppu, but I guess it might just not be as expansive a place as it looks on a map Oh wow, that's quite a few, I thought it'd just be one in each city kinda thing, but that's nice that there'll be another British person nearby~
Thank you, I'll message you later [have to go to work now] for sure!~
Haha, I was like that with where I was on my year abroad so I'm hoping I'll be able to do the same with Oita once I've started living there~ thank you!~

I think you'll be fine within Beppu and I also travelled there from Bear Origin and then on to Fukuoka afterwards by public transport so you should be able to easily visit popular destinations in Kyushu without driving. Also there are some amazing onsen - it was the first place I ever went to one!
